What to buy first

One shape, five to ten of it, with a lid the maker is willing to call leak-proof. That is the whole first purchase. Not the 30-piece assortment, not the bento box with the fork in the lid — a stack of identical meal-sized containers that fit your bag, your microwave and your fridge shelf. For most people who train that is a 3.5-to-4-cup rectangle with a latching, gasketed lid, and the ranked list is on the best meal prep containers.

The second purchase, a month later, is the one the first week revealed: divided trays because you kept mixing sauce into rice, or bowls because you eat a lot of chili, or a freezer tray because you cooked more than a week of it. Buy the second set after the schedule tells you what it is.

How the category divides

Every container on this site sits in one of five groups, and each group has its own roundup:

• Glass sets — tempered or borosilicate glass, latching or press-on lids, oven-rated on most. The kitchen-side winner. Best glass containers.

What decides price

The lid, twice over. First because a latching, gasketed lid costs more to make than a press-on one, and every set with a stated leak-proof claim sits in a higher band than the sets without one. Second because the lid is the part that dies: glass lasts a decade, a latch hinge lasts a year or two, so a set whose maker sells replacement lids — or warranties them for life, as Snapware does — is cheaper over five years than a set that makes you buy the glass again to get a new lid. The material is the other lever. Borosilicate and tempered glass cost more than soda-lime; Tritan costs more than polypropylene; both are worth it if the container reheats or holds anything with tomato in it. The mistake buyers make

Trusting the word "airtight". Airtight describes a fridge seal; it says nothing about the container on its side in a bag with a pound of rice pushing on the lid from the inside. Makers who have tested that use the phrase "leak-proof", and they use it on purpose. The second mistake is the microwave. Glasslock and Snapware both tell you to unlatch or remove the lid before reheating; Sistema says lid off; only Rubbermaid's vented lids and Bentgo's valved glass lids are designed to stay on. Read the lid rule on the card before you find out with a warped hinge.

How long the food inside actually lasts

The container doesn't change the clock. The USDA's number for cooked leftovers is 3 to 4 days at 40°F or below, and the FDA's chart puts cooked meat dishes at 2 to 3 months and cooked poultry dishes at 4 to 6 months in a 0°F freezer for quality (safe indefinitely).
