The verdict
The reason this is a bag decision and not a material decision is weight. A tempered-glass 3.5-cup rectangle with its lid weighs roughly three to four times what a polypropylene tray of the same volume weighs — Bentgo publishes 3 oz for a Prep tray, and the glass sets on this page publish set weights that put a single glass container with lid near a pound. Four meals in glass is a bag you feel by mid-week. Four meals in plastic is a bag you forget you are carrying.
In the kitchen: glass
Every advantage glass has happens inside the house. Oven: Glasslock's oven series is rated to 230°C, Rubbermaid's Brilliance glass bases to 450°F, Ello's rounds to 450°F; no plastic on this site is oven-rated at all. Stains and odors: Pyrex's own wording is that its glass "resists stains and does not absorb food odors"; Rubbermaid needs a named plastic (StainShield) to make the same claim, and ordinary polypropylene doesn't make it. Dishwasher: glass goes on any rack; most plastic lids are top-rack only or hand-wash. Lifespan: glass doesn't cloud, warp or scratch; the lid is the part that dies, on either material.
The kitchen cost is thermal shock and drops. Snapware's page says it: avoid sudden temperature changes. Borosilicate (Bentgo Glass, OXO) tolerates more of that than tempered soda-lime (Pyrex, Glasslock). And glass dropped on tile is glass gone — Ello's silicone sleeve exists for that reason.
On the commute: plastic
Weight, as above. Then the drop: a plastic tray bounces. Then the seal under load: a latched plastic lid (Rubbermaid Brilliance, Sistema) makes the same leak-proof claim its glass counterpart does, and the latches are the same design, so a plastic set gives up nothing in the bag. Then the microwave: Rubbermaid's vented lid stays on to reheat, which no latched glass lid on this site is designed to do except Bentgo's valved glass one.
The commute cost is the plastic itself. Polypropylene stains from tomato by week three, holds odors, and clouds with scratches over a year. Tritan (Rubbermaid uses its own StainShield; several shakers use Eastman Tritan) resists both at a higher price. And the makers rate none of it for the oven — a plastic set is a microwave-only set.
Safety, in the FDA's words
The question under most glass-vs-plastic searches is whether plastic is safe to heat food in. The FDA's page on bisphenol A says its current assessment, after a review of more than 300 studies, is that BPA "is safe at the current levels occurring in foods", and that uses of substances that migrate from packaging into food are subject to premarket approval as food contact substances. Every plastic container on this site is labeled BPA-free by its maker anyway, and Bentgo's additionally states no PFAS, vinyl, lead or PVC. The practical rules that matter more than the polymer — lid off, medium power, retire a scratched or clouded tray — are on are plastic meal prep containers safe.

What we do instead: read the lid, material and care ratings the maker actually publishes and repeat its wording ("leak-proof", "oven safe to 450°F", "top-rack only"), do the container-fit and ice-pack arithmetic from published dimensions and the USDA's numbers, and score every pick on a public rubric for its category that weights the seal, the material and the fit first. Every figure links to where it came from; where the maker's page would not load we cite a retailer and say so.

Is it safe to microwave food in plastic meal prep containers?
In containers the maker rates microwave-safe, lid off (unless the lid is vented for it), yes. The FDA regulates the materials; the maker's rating covers the use. Retire a tray that is scratched, clouded or warped.
Do glass containers keep food fresher than plastic?
The seal keeps food fresh, not the material. A latched, gasketed plastic lid and a latched glass lid make the same claim. Glass does keep food tasting like itself longer because it doesn't hold last week's odors.
Which is cheaper over five years?
Glass, if the lids are covered — Snapware warranties its lids for life and Pyrex for two years — because the glass itself outlives any plastic tray. Plastic, if you lose containers, because a lost glass container costs more.
Can I put a glass container in the freezer?
