What to buy first

A 28-ounce plastic shaker with a wire whisk, a lid the maker calls leak-proof, and every part rated for the dishwasher. That is the BlenderBottle Classic V2, it costs less than a tub of whey, and it is the right first shaker for almost everyone. Buy two, because one is always in the sink. If the bottle rides in a gym bag for hours, spend the extra on the locking-cap version (the Strada) and stop finding whey in your shoes.

How the category divides

• Whisk-ball shakers — a wire or plastic ball rattles through the powder. The most effective design for thick casein and mass gainers, and the most parts to wash.
• Ball-free shakers — a molded vortex wall (the Helimix design, now sold by YETI) or a molded agitator that stays put. Nothing loose, two parts, quieter; needs a real shake for thick powders. Best shaker without a ball.
• Stainless steel shakers — double-wall vacuum bottles with an agitator, rated cold for 24 to 30+ hours by their makers. Mix at 6 a.m., drink cold after a shift. Best stainless steel shaker.
• Electric shakers — a motor in the base. Mix with a button; hand wash the base; accept a smaller working volume. Best electric shaker.

What decides price

Material and mechanism. Polypropylene with a wire whisk is the floor. Tritan (odor-resistant) with a locking cap is one band up. Vacuum-insulated steel with a stated cold-hold time is two bands up, and a motor with a battery and a warranty is its own category. Capacity barely moves the price; what you are paying for at the top is insulation hours and a leak claim the maker will stand behind. The scoop math

Two scoops of whey is roughly 60 to 70 grams of powder and displaces about 3 ounces; add 12 ounces of liquid and you are at 15 ounces before you shake. A shaker needs headroom to mix, so a 20-ounce bottle is a one-scoop bottle and a 28-ounce bottle is a two-scoop bottle. That single number explains most of the ranking on this site: the 20-ounce Smartshake and the PROMiXX PRO (which the maker says to fill to 12–14 ounces) score low on capacity because they are one-scoop bottles, however good the rest of the design is.

The mistake buyers make

Leaving it. A shaker with an inch of whey at the bottom, lid on, in a hot car for six hours grows a smell that three dishwasher cycles won't lift. The fix is a rinse within the hour and a proper wash that night, with the lid off and the gasket out where there is one.
