The best shaker bottle for pre-workout: carry the scoop dry, mix it at the gym

What pre-workout asks of a bottle

Pre-workout is a different problem from a protein shake, and the ranking looks different because of it. A protein shake is 40 to 60 g of thick powder that needs mechanical mixing, which is why the general shaker ranking weights the whisk ball so heavily. A pre-workout serving is 8 to 15 g of fine, highly soluble powder — mostly citrulline, beta-alanine, caffeine and citric acid — that dissolves in cold water with a few shakes and tastes worse the longer it sits mixed.

So mixing barely matters here, and three other things matter a lot:

• Dry storage. You want the scoop measured at home and mixed at the gym, twenty minutes before the first set. That means a compartment, not a baggie.
• A cap that stays shut. A bottle of water with powder in the base rides in a bag with clean clothes in it. A flip cap that pops is a laundry problem.
• Cold water. Pre-workout in warm water is the most common reason people stop taking it. Insulation is a palatability feature, not a luxury.

Carrying the scoop dry

Two bottles here solve it properly, and they solve it differently.

Stanley Vitalize. A 3 oz Tritan container with stamped measurements screws onto the base of the bottle. Three ounces is roughly 85 ml, which holds a pre-workout scoop with room to spare — or a scoop of whey for afterwards. The container is part of the bottle, so there is one object in the bag.

Smartshake Original2Go. Two detachable compartments, 100 ml and 150 ml, screw onto the bottom. Two is genuinely better than one if you take capsules as well as powder, and 250 ml of total storage is the most on this page. The cost is height, and a mixing mechanism Smartshake does not describe on its page at all.

Everything else on this page carries the powder in whatever you put it in. That is fine — a dedicated funnel container costs very little — but it is two objects and one more thing to forget.

Why 20 oz is the right size here

This is the one page on this site where 20 oz is not a criticism. A two-scoop protein shake needs about 15 oz of volume before you leave room to shake, which is why 28 oz wins on best shaker bottle and why the Smartshake gets marked down on BlenderBottle vs Smartshake. A pre-workout serving is one small scoop in 10 to 12 oz of cold water: in a 20 oz bottle that is half full, which is plenty of headroom, and in a 28 oz bottle it is a lot of empty bottle to carry.

The corollary: if you want one bottle for pre-workout and post-workout protein, buy 28 oz and carry the powder separately. Nothing here does both jobs perfectly — the Stanley's 20 oz is too small for two scoops of whey, and the 28 oz bottles have nowhere to put the pre-workout.

Citric acid, and the smell that follows

Pre-workout formulas are acidic and heavily flavored, and both facts matter for the bottle. Acid is hard on gaskets over time; artificial flavoring is what makes a bottle smell like sour candy three weeks in. Steel and Tritan both resist it better than polypropylene — BlenderBottle describes Tritan as "stain- and odor-resistant", Ice Shaker says its steel "will not absorb odors", and Stanley's bottle is 18/8 steel with a Tritan lid.
