How long does meal prep last in the fridge? Three to four days, and here's the schedule
The USDA's number for cooked leftovers is 3 to 4 days at 40°F or below. That makes a Sunday cook good through Wednesday, not Friday — unless you freeze the back half of the week. Here is the rule, the chart by food, and the plan.

The rule, in the USDA's words
The USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service's leftovers guidance is the source everyone else is quoting. Refrigerate cooked food within 2 hours of cooking. Keep the refrigerator at 40°F or below. Leftovers can be kept in the refrigerator for 3 to 4 days. Reheat to 165°F. Divide large amounts into shallow containers so they cool quickly. Those five sentences are the whole food-safety basis of meal prep, and none of them mention the container brand.
By food: the FDA chart
The FDA's refrigerator and freezer storage chart breaks the 3-to-4 days out by food, and the freezer column is where the plan for days four and five comes from (freezer times are for quality; 0°F keeps food safe indefinitely).
| Food (as listed by the FDA) | Refrigerator, 40°F | Freezer, 0°F |
|---|---|---|
| Cooked meat & meat dishes | 3–4 days | 2–3 months |
| Cooked poultry dishes | 3–4 days | 4–6 months |
| Cooked poultry pieces, plain | 3–4 days | 4 months |
| Soups & stews (vegetable or meat) | 3–4 days | 2–3 months |
| Cooked fish | 3–4 days | 4–6 months |
| Hard-cooked eggs | 1 week | Don't freeze |
| Store-cooked convenience meals | 3–4 days | Don't freeze |
| Frozen casseroles | Keep frozen | 3–4 months |

The clock starts at cooking, not at packing
Day one is the day you cooked. Cook Sunday afternoon, and Sunday is day one, Monday two, Tuesday three, Wednesday four. That is the whole 3-to-4-day window. The other clock is the 2-hour rule: perishable food left above 40°F for more than 2 hours (1 hour if the room is above 90°F) is out. It applies at both ends — the batch cooling on the counter Sunday, and the container sitting on a desk Wednesday. The USDA's shallow-container advice is about the first; the ice-pack page is about the second.
The Sunday-to-Friday schedule
This is the schedule every plan in the systems hub is built on; the shift-work versions move the cook day but keep the arithmetic.
What the container changes
Not the safety window. A sealed container doesn't extend 3 to 4 days; the USDA's number assumes a covered container in a cold fridge and it doesn't get better than that. What the seal changes is whether the food is worth eating on day four — a latched, gasketed lid keeps rice from drying and chicken from picking up the fridge's smell, and a shallow container cools faster on Sunday, which is the part of the rule most people skip. Glass or plastic makes no difference to the clock; glass vs plastic is a different decision.

How Meal & Macro scores gear
Units we claim to have tested: 0
Plenty of sites say they packed every container on the list for a week. We didn't, and we say so. What we do instead: read the lid, material and care ratings the maker actually publishes and repeat its wording ("leak-proof", "oven safe to 450°F", "top-rack only"), do the container-fit and ice-pack arithmetic from published dimensions and the USDA's numbers, and score every pick on a public rubric for its category that weights the seal, the material and the fit first. Every figure links to where it came from; where the maker's page would not load we cite a retailer and say so.
Scores are editorial judgments from that documented research, not test results. Commissions never set a score or decide a pick. The rubrics and their weights are published.
Questions
Frequently asked
Can meal prep last 5 days in the fridge?
Not within the USDA's guidance. Cooked leftovers are 3 to 4 days at 40°F or below. Freeze days four and five on cook day, or cook a second time midweek.
Does meal prep last longer in glass containers?
No. The 3-to-4-day window is about bacteria in cold food, not the container material. A good seal keeps the food tasting better inside the window; it doesn't extend it.
How long does cooked chicken last in the fridge for meal prep?
3 to 4 days, per the FDA chart (cooked poultry, plain pieces or dishes). Frozen: 4 months plain, 4–6 months in a dish, for quality.
How long does cooked rice last in the fridge?
Treat it as cooked leftovers: 3 to 4 days, and cool it within the 2-hour window. The cooling part matters more for rice than for most foods — see how to meal prep rice.
Is it safe to eat meal prep on day 5?
The USDA's window ends at day four. Past it, the guidance is to discard. Freezing on day one is the fix.

We don't own or use-test this gear and we don't pretend to. Materials, capacities, seals and care ratings come from the maker's own product pages (linked on every product) or, where the maker's page would not load, from a retailer listing we label as such. Food-safety numbers are quoted from the USDA and FDA pages linked above. Where a figure isn't published we say so. Prices are set by Amazon and change often, so we don't print them.
