Cook & Freeze / Guide

How long does meal prep last in the freezer? Safe indefinitely at 0°F; here are the quality windows

The USDA's line is that food kept frozen at 0°F is always safe — only the quality suffers with time. The FDA's chart puts numbers on the quality: two to six months for most cooked meals, longer for raw protein. Here is the chart, the label, and the thaw.

Safe vs good: the USDA's distinction

So the freezer question is really two: is it safe (yes, if it stayed frozen), and is it still worth eating (the chart). The second is what the label and the packaging are for.

FDA Refrigerator & Freezer Storage Chart, March 2018 (linked in Sources). Cooked rice and grains aren't listed as their own row; treat a rice-and-chicken meal as a cooked poultry dish.

Two things stand out for a meal-prepper. Cooked food has a shorter quality window than raw, because cooking drives off moisture and what's left dries faster — which is why the FDA notes that raw meat keeps its quality longer than its cooked counterpart. And poultry in broth or gravy lasts longer than plain, because the liquid is a barrier against the air. Freeze the chicken in its sauce.

The label

Contents and date, on the bag, in marker. Stasher bags take a dry-erase or chalk marker on the silicone; vacuum bags take a Sharpie; tape on a container. Eat the oldest first — a freezer organized front-to-back by date is a freezer where nothing reaches month seven. The windows above are the shelf life; the label is how you know where you are in it.

Thawing, and the fridge clock

Thaw in the refrigerator overnight. Once thawed, the food is back on the fridge clock — the USDA's 3 to 4 days for cooked leftovers — and the FDA's cold-storage guidance treats refrigerator-thawed food as if it had never been frozen for that count. Don't thaw on the counter (that's the 2-hour danger-zone rule), and don't refreeze thawed cooked food; reheat it to 165°F and eat it. The reheating method by container is on how to reheat meal prep, and the fridge-side rule is on how long meal prep lasts in the fridge.

How Meal & Macro scores gear

Units we claim to have tested: 0

Plenty of sites say they packed every container on the list for a week. We didn't, and we say so. What we do instead: read the lid, material and care ratings the maker actually publishes and repeat its wording ("leak-proof", "oven safe to 450°F", "top-rack only"), do the container-fit and ice-pack arithmetic from published dimensions and the USDA's numbers, and score every pick on a public rubric for its category that weights the seal, the material and the fit first. Every figure links to where it came from; where the maker's page would not load we cite a retailer and say so.

Scores are editorial judgments from that documented research, not test results. Commissions never set a score or decide a pick. The rubrics and their weights are published.

Questions

Frequently asked

Can frozen meal prep go bad?

Not in the safety sense if it stayed at 0°F — the USDA says constantly frozen food is always safe. It loses quality past the FDA's windows.

How long does frozen cooked chicken last?

Per the FDA: cooked poultry dishes 4–6 months, plain cooked pieces 4 months, pieces in broth or gravy 6 months.

How long does frozen chili last?

Soups and stews: 2–3 months for quality on the FDA's chart. Safe longer; less good.

Can you refreeze thawed meal prep?

Don't refreeze thawed cooked food; reheat it to 165°F and eat it within the fridge window. Thaw only what you'll eat.
