Why a kit and not a list
Because the pieces constrain each other. The containers have to fit the bag; the bag has to fit the locker; the ice packs have to fit beside the containers; the sheet pan has to be the thing that cools the batch the containers hold; the freezer tray has to make portions the containers can take. Buy them one at a time from five separate rankings and you end up with a tall bowl in a shallow cooler. This page takes the top pick from each ranking — containers, scales, shakers, lunch bags, pans — and checks them against each other.
How they fit together
The specific fits: Glasslock's 3.5-cup rectangles lie flat in the Bentgo bag's 10.5 × 7 × 8.9 in compartment three deep. The XL ice packs (5 × 2.5 × 7 in) fit the bag's two side pockets. The Souper Cubes blocks are one cup, which is one Glasslock rectangle's carb portion. The half sheet is 17.1 × 12.1 in, which is two pounds of chicken thighs. And the ESN00's 11 lb capacity tares a Glasslock rectangle with pounds to spare.
The order to buy them in
- Containers and two sheet pans. You can meal prep with these and a pot you own. Week one.
- Ice packs and the bag. The day the meals leave the house. Week two.
- The shaker. The day a shake becomes one of the meals.
- The scale. The day you decide to track. (If you never do, skip it — the containers portion by fill line.)
- The freezer tray. The first Sunday you cook more than four days of food.
- The rice cooker. When rice is on the plate more days than not.
The swaps
Backpack instead of tote: keep the Glasslock (it latches) and swap the bag for the Lifewit 24 L on lunch bag vs backpack. Buyer's guide: what this kit assumes
A microwave where you eat. A fridge at home with a shelf to spare. A Sunday, or any ninety minutes, once a week. If those aren't your week, the systems pages adjust the kit: rotating shifts on meal prep for shift workers, no microwave on night shift, four meals in one bag on 12-hour shifts, a household on busy parents, protein that has to add up on the gym. How Meal & Macro scores gear
Units we claim to have tested: 0
Plenty of sites say they packed every container on the list for a week. We didn't, and we say so. What we do instead: read the lid, material and care ratings the maker actually publishes and repeat its wording ("leak-proof", "oven safe to 450°F", "top-rack only"), do the container-fit and ice-pack arithmetic from published dimensions and the USDA's numbers, and score every pick on a public rubric for its category that weights the seal, the material and the fit first. Every figure links to where it came from; where the maker's page would not load we cite a retailer and say so.
Scores are editorial judgments from that documented research, not test results. Commissions never set a score or decide a pick. The rubrics and their weights are published.

What do I need to start meal prepping?
Containers and a sheet pan. Everything else — bag, ice packs, scale, shaker, tray, cooker — follows as the schedule reveals it.
How many containers do I need to start?
Five to ten of one meal-sized shape. The Glasslock 18-piece gives you two 3.5-cup rectangles plus sizes; many people buy a second set after week one.
Do I need a food scale to meal prep?
Only if you track macros. Otherwise the containers' fill lines and a divided tray portion well enough.
Do I need a rice cooker?
Not to start. A pot works; the cooker earns its place when rice is on the plate most days and you want it cooked unattended and held warm.
