Container fit first
Most lunch bags are sold by can count, which tells you nothing about a 9.5 by 6.6 inch divided tray. The rubric weights container fit at 30 points and gives full credit only to makers who publish interior dimensions or a container count: Bentgo (10.5 × 7 × 8.9 in large compartment, "up to 3 prep containers, 1 prep bowl, 2 ice packs"), Arctic Zone (9.8 × 4.95 × 10.25 in interior). The rest are scored from the arithmetic on the exterior dimensions, which is a guess we label as one. Measure your containers — the sizes are on what size containers do I need — then buy the bag whose interior you can check them against.

Desk with a fridge, or shift without one
Fridge at work: the bag's job is the commute, an hour at most. One meal, one ice pack, a small bag that fits the shelf — the Bentgo Deluxe or the YETI Daytrip. No fridge: the bag is the fridge for eight to twelve hours. Two ice packs, a bag with insulation the maker will put hours on, and containers that seal — the Bentgo Prep Deluxe or the Arctic Zone, or a meal-management bag from the meal-management ranking for four meals. Buyer's guide: liner, fabric, carry
Liner
PEVA foil (Bentgo, Lifewit) wipes clean and tears if a fork goes through it. A hard liner (Arctic Zone's HardBody, "leak proof, easy clean") holds its shape and rinses out. Leak-proof is worth having; sauce will escape a container eventually.
Fabric
Carhartt's Rain Defender and Lifewit's water-resistant Oxford shed a wet parking lot; Bentgo's water-resistant polyester is fine for a car-to-desk commute. Denier is rarely printed on a lunch bag (Lifewit prints 1680D on its backpack, not its tote).
Carry
A shoulder strap for the walk from the lot; a padded handle for the door. A backpack for a bike — with the lid rule on lunch bag vs backpack.
By person
Jobsite: construction workers. Hospital: nurses. Something that survives a truck bed: lunch boxes for men.

Plenty of sites say they packed every container on the list for a week. We didn't, and we say so. What we do instead: read the lid, material and care ratings the maker actually publishes and repeat its wording ("leak-proof", "oven safe to 450°F", "top-rack only"), do the container-fit and ice-pack arithmetic from published dimensions and the USDA's numbers, and score every pick on a public rubric for its category that weights the seal, the material and the fit first. Every figure links to where it came from; where the maker's page would not load we cite a retailer and say so.
Scores are editorial judgments from that documented research, not test results. Commissions never set a score or decide a pick. The rubrics and their weights are published.

Is a hard lunch box better than a soft bag?
