What size meal prep containers do I need? The cups-per-meal math
A training lunch is 3 to 4 cups. A bulk dinner is 5 to 7. A snack is 1 to 2. Here is the arithmetic by goal, mapped to the actual capacities makers print, and the answer to how many.

The math: what a meal takes up
Volume, not weight, is what fills a container, and cooked food takes up roughly these volumes: 6 oz of cooked chicken breast, sliced, is about a cup; a cup of cooked rice is a cup; a cup of roasted broccoli is a cup that compresses to two-thirds. So a 6-oz-protein, 1-cup-carb, 1-cup-vegetable meal is 3 cups, plus headroom so the lid seats and the microwave has somewhere to steam. That is why the 3.5-cup Glasslock rectangle, the 4-cup Bentgo tray and the 4.2-cup Sistema box are the sizes that show up under "meal prep" — they are 3 cups of food plus the inch.

Portion sizes are illustrative shapes of a meal, not a prescription; the container sizes are the makers' published capacities that fit them.
Real capacities, from the makers
- Glasslock 18-piece: rectangles at 1.6, 3.5 (×2) and 6.3 cups; squares 1.5 and 3.3; rounds 0.7, 1.6 and 3.1.
- Pyrex Simply Store 18-piece: rectangles at 3 (×2) and 6 cups; rounds 1 (×2), 2 (×2), 4 and 7.

Notice how the assortments split: two lunch-sized pieces, one dinner-sized piece, and five or six pieces under two cups. An 18-piece set is mostly snack and sauce containers. That is fine for a fridge; it is why the overall ranking on best meal prep containers tells you to buy one meal-sized shape in quantity first.
How many containers
Meals per day times days per cook, plus one. One lunch a day, five days, one cook: six. Two meals a day: eleven. Four meals on a twelve-hour shift, four shifts: seventeen — which is why the 12-hour-shift plan leans on divided trays and a freezer tray rather than an 18-piece glass assortment. The plus-one is the container in the sink.

Plenty of sites say they packed every container on the list for a week. We didn't, and we say so. What we do instead: read the lid, material and care ratings the maker actually publishes and repeat its wording ("leak-proof", "oven safe to 450°F", "top-rack only"), do the container-fit and ice-pack arithmetic from published dimensions and the USDA's numbers, and score every pick on a public rubric for its category that weights the seal, the material and the fit first. Every figure links to where it came from; where the maker's page would not load we cite a retailer and say so.

Is a 3-cup container big enough for meal prep?
For a cutting or maintenance lunch (6 oz protein, a cup of carbs, a cup of vegetables), yes, with headroom. For a bulk dinner, no — you want 5 to 7 cups.
How many ounces is a meal prep container?
The common lunch size is 24–34 oz (3–4.2 cups). Bentgo's tray is 32 oz; Sistema's box is 33.8 oz; Freshware's disposable is 24 oz.
Should I buy a mixed-size set?
Second. Buy five to ten of one meal size first, then add sizes once a week of packing shows you which ones you use.
