How we ranked them

A meal prep container has one job that a mixing bowl doesn't: it has to survive the trip. So the rubric weights the seal and the material at 25 points each, the lid's longevity and replacement availability at 15, the stack at 15, and dishwasher and stain resistance at 10, with the last 10 for value. Every score comes from the maker's own page — what it calls the lid ("airtight", "leak-proof", "custom-fit"), what it rates the material for (oven to 450°F, microwave lid-off, top-rack only), and whether it sells a replacement lid. The order is the pick for this page's buyer — a week of meals in one set — and the rubric score beside each product is its judgment against the whole container category; the two disagree at the top on purpose. Snapware's five-piece set outscores Glasslock's on the rubric because its lids carry a lifetime warranty, and it sits second because five containers is a Monday-to-Wednesday set and nine is a week. The ranking that fell out is not a glass-versus-plastic ranking. It's a lid ranking. The four sets at the top all have a latching lid the maker is willing to call leak-proof; the four below have press-on or custom-fit lids that seal for a fridge and not for a backpack. Glass or plastic, decided by the bag

The long version is on glass vs plastic meal prep containers. The short version: glass wins on everything that happens in the kitchen and loses on everything that happens in transit. Tempered or borosilicate glass is rated for the oven (Glasslock's oven series to 230°C, Rubbermaid Brilliance glass to 450°F, Ello to 450°F), doesn't stain, doesn't hold last week's curry, and goes on any dishwasher rack. It also weighs roughly three to four times what the same volume of polypropylene weighs, and a bag with four glass containers and their lids is a bag you feel by Wednesday.

So decide by the bag. If your containers live in a fridge and go to a microwave down the hall, buy glass. If they ride in a backpack on a bike, buy the best plastic — Rubbermaid Brilliance, whose latching vented lid does what the glass lids do at a fraction of the weight — or buy glass and a bag with a shelf so the weight sits level (the meal-management bags are built for exactly this).

The lid is the product

Every glass set on this page uses more or less the same glass. What differs is the lid, and the lid is what fails. Three designs show up:

• Four-tab latching lid with a silicone gasket (Glasslock, Snapware, OXO Smart Seal). The tabs clamp the gasket down; the maker calls it airtight and leak-proof; it survives a sideways bag. The hinge on each tab is the wear point, which is why Snapware's lifetime lid warranty matters.
• Two-latch lid with vents (Rubbermaid Brilliance, glass and plastic). Two latches instead of four, but a stated 100% leak-proof seal and — the part nobody else offers — vents under the latches so the lid stays on in the microwave. The maker's own instruction is to reheat with the lid on.
• Press-on or custom-fit lid (Pyrex Simply Store, Bentgo Prep, Anchor TrueSeal). Seals for a fridge, fine in a bag carried flat, not something to trust on its side with rice and sauce. Pyrex calls its lids airtight; Bentgo calls its lids custom-fit; neither says leak-proof, and that is the tell.

What size, and how many

A single lunch for someone who trains is 3 to 4 cups: roughly 6 oz of cooked protein, a cup of cooked rice or potatoes, and a cup or two of vegetables. How many: five for a work week if you also eat dinner from the pot, ten if you pack two meals a day. The mistake buyers make

The second mistake is microwaving with a latched lid on. Glasslock and Snapware both say to unlatch or remove the lid; the only lids on this page designed to stay on in the microwave are Rubbermaid's vented ones and Bentgo's glass lids with their steam valve. A latched gasket lid in a microwave builds pressure until something gives, and what gives is the hinge.
