Every glass set uses roughly the same glass. The lid is where they differ and where they fail, so this list ranks eight sets on the seal, the oven rating the maker actually prints, and whether the lid is warrantied.

Why glass, and why not
Glass wins the kitchen. It doesn't stain from tomato or turmeric, it doesn't hold Tuesday's curry for Thursday's oatmeal, it goes on any dishwasher rack, and the tempered and borosilicate sets on this page are rated for the oven — Glasslock's oven series to 230°C, Rubbermaid Brilliance glass and Ello to 450°F, Bentgo and OXO with an oven rating and no printed limit. You can roast in it, chill it, reheat it and eat from it. Glass loses the commute: it weighs three to four times what polypropylene does, and a backpack with four glass containers is a different backpack by Wednesday. The decision by bag is on glass vs plastic; this page assumes you have made it and want the best glass.

Because a glass container's biggest advantage is the oven, we quote every maker's oven wording exactly and rank on it. The spread is wider than the marketing suggests:

Three lid designs
Four-tab latching with a gasket — Glasslock, Snapware, OXO. The standard for anything that travels. The gasket lifts out for cleaning; the tab hinges are the wear point. Two-latch with vents — Rubbermaid Brilliance, the only glass lid designed to stay on in the microwave. Glass with a silicone seal and a valve — Bentgo, no plastic anywhere, heavier, chips if dropped. Press-on — Pyrex, Anchor. Sealed for the fridge, upright-only in a bag. Ello's sealing snaps sit between the latching and press-on groups: the maker calls them leak-proof, and the silicone sleeve is the reason the set is the best of the rounds.

Buyer's guide: the three glass questions
Tempered or borosilicate?
Tempered soda-lime (Pyrex, Glasslock, Snapware, Anchor) is stronger against drops; borosilicate (Bentgo, OXO) is stronger against temperature swings. If your routine is fridge-to-oven, borosilicate. If your routine is bag-to-microwave, either, and tempered is cheaper.
How many, what size?
Five to ten of one meal-sized shape. The 3.5-cup Glasslock rectangle, the 3.4-cup Ello round and the 4-cup Snapware square are all built for a single training meal; the sizing guide has the table. The 18-piece assortments are a fridge set first and a lunch set second.
Can it go in the freezer?
Every set here says freezer-safe. The rules that keep it from cracking — headroom, cool before freezing, thaw in the fridge — are on can you freeze glass containers.

Units we claim to have tested: 0
Plenty of sites say they packed every container on the list for a week. We didn't, and we say so. What we do instead: read the lid, material and care ratings the maker actually publishes and repeat its wording ("leak-proof", "oven safe to 450°F", "top-rack only"), do the container-fit and ice-pack arithmetic from published dimensions and the USDA's numbers, and score every pick on a public rubric for its category that weights the seal, the material and the fit first. Every figure links to where it came from; where the maker's page would not load we cite a retailer and say so.
Scores are editorial judgments from that documented research, not test results. Commissions never set a score or decide a pick. The rubrics and their weights are published.

Frequently asked
Is borosilicate glass better than tempered glass for meal prep?
Better against thermal shock (fridge to oven); not better against drops. Both are rated for oven, microwave, freezer and dishwasher by the makers here.
Can glass meal prep containers go in the oven with the lid on?
No. Every maker that addresses it says the lid — plastic or silicone-sealed glass — stays out of a conventional oven. Bases only.
Which glass containers are leak-proof?
Glasslock, Snapware, Rubbermaid Brilliance, Bentgo Glass and Ello all use the word on their pages. Pyrex Simply Store says "airtight"; Anchor says "designed to prevent spills & leaks". The list is on best leak-proof containers.
Do glass containers stain?
No — Pyrex's page puts it as "resist stains and do not absorb food odors". The plastic lids can; the glass doesn't.
