The best leak-proof meal prep containers, by the maker's own word

The word, and who uses it

Makers choose their words carefully because they get held to them. "Airtight" is a fridge claim: the seal keeps air out when the container is upright and still. "Leak-proof" is a transit claim: the seal holds liquid in when the container is on its side under the weight of what's inside. Pyrex's Simply Store page says airtight. Bentgo's Prep trays say custom-fit. Anchor Hocking says "designed to prevent spills and leaks". None of those three is on this list. The seven that are use the word leak-proof, and the Evidence table on each card quotes the sentence.

Four seal designs

Four-tab latch over a gasket (Snapware, Glasslock, OXO). The gasket does the sealing; the tabs supply the clamping force at each edge. It is the most reliable design for a sideways container and the one with the most moving parts — four hinges, one of which will crack first. Snapware's lifetime lid warranty and Glasslock's no-separate-gasket policy are the two ends of how makers handle that.

Two-latch with vents (Rubbermaid Brilliance). Two latches on the short ends, a gasket, and steam vents under the latches. Fewer hinges, and the only design here that also solves microwave-with-lid. The trade is that a two-latch lid can lift at a corner if the container is overfilled; keep the fill line honest.

Locking clips (Sistema). Four hinged clips on the base pull the lid down onto a flexible seal. Same principle as tabs, mounted on the box instead of the lid, which makes the lid itself simpler and the clips the wear point.

Screw-top and pinch (W&P, Stasher). A thread or a pinch seal has no hinge to break. The W&P bowl's lid threads on like a jar; the Stasher's seal is a press-fit the length of the opening. Both need a full, careful close — a cross-threaded lid or a half-pinched seal leaks worse than a latch.

The sink test you can run

We haven't run it, and we say so. You can, in a minute: fill the container halfway with water, close it as the maker instructs, hold it upside down over the sink for thirty seconds, then lay it on each side for thirty. A latch that passes wet and empty will pass with rice and sauce. Do it once when the set is new and once a year, because the day a latch hinge cracks is not the day you find out.
