Bentgo Prep review: ten identical trays, and the claim Bentgo never makes

Twenty pieces, four cups a tray, three ounces each, and a lid the maker calls custom-fit rather than leak-proof. Read that wording literally and the whole line makes sense: this is a fridge-and-upright-bag set, and judged as one it is very good.

What the Bentgo Prep line actually is

Bentgo Prep is the brand's bulk meal-prep plastic, sold as 20-piece sets of ten containers and ten lids, and it comes in two shapes that matter here. The 3-compartment trays are 4-cup divided rectangles — a 2-cup main well and two 1-cup wells — measuring 9.5 by 6.6 by 2 inches and weighing 3 ounces each. The 1-compartment bowls are 6.75-cup round tubs, 7.1 inches across and 3.8 tall, at 2.2 ounces each.

Bentgo states both sets are free of PFAS, BPA, vinyl, lead and PVC, which is a more specific label claim than most plastic sets make — PFAS in particular is the one buyers now ask about, and most makers stay quiet. Everything is top-shelf dishwasher safe with hand-washing recommended for the lids.

Note what this is not. It is not a latching set. It is not a glass set. It is not a lunch box. It is a stack of identical disposables-that-aren't: cheap enough per unit to own ten, light enough that ten in a bag is nothing, and uniform enough that a week of Sunday cooking goes into a single column in the fridge. Judged as that thing, it is one of the best options in the category. Judged as a sealed container, it fails — and the reason it fails is printed on Bentgo's own page.

Every figure as Bentgo publishes it on the two product pages linked under Sources.

The weight line is the one people underrate. Three ounces a tray means ten full trays of food weigh barely more than the food. A comparable 4-cup glass rectangle runs several times that empty, so a four-meal lunch bag packed in Prep trays versus glass is a materially different thing on your shoulder — and a materially different load on an ice pack, because glass carries a lot of thermal mass that starts at fridge temperature.

The lid: read the wording literally

Bentgo describes these lids as "custom-fit lids that keep your meals fresh" and as "clear, stackable lids". It does not say leak-proof. It does not say airtight. It does not say gasketed. Compare that with Rubbermaid, which says of the Brilliance line "100% airtight, leak-proof seal and secure latches" — a company that is willing to put that sentence on a page does, and a company that is not, does not.

There is a second, quieter consequence of a press-on lid on a divided tray: the compartment walls are not sealed from each other. The divider rises to the lid but the lid does not clamp onto it, so sauce from the main well migrates into the 1-cup wells once the tray tilts. If keeping dressing off greens is the whole point of your container, that is a reason to look at a latched divided box instead — the salad container roundup covers that case, and best leak-proof meal prep containers is the ranking that only admits sets whose makers make the claim.

Durability is the other long-run caveat and it follows from the same thinness that makes the trays light. Thin polypropylene scratches, and scratched polypropylene clouds and stains — tomato and turmeric are the usual culprits. The hand-wash-lids recommendation is Bentgo hedging the same thing. Our when to replace plastic food containers guide has the signs worth watching for; on a set this cheap per unit, replacing a few trays a year is a reasonable plan rather than a failure.

Trays in, lids out

Bentgo is unusually blunt here, and it is to their credit: "Microwave trays only" on the 3-compartment set and "Do not microwave lids, only the trays are microwavable" on the bowls. That is a real workflow instruction, not fine print. Lid off, tray in, and if you want a splatter cover use a plate.

This is not a Bentgo-specific limitation so much as the normal rule for press-on plastic lids, and it is worth knowing which of your containers break it. Rubbermaid Brilliance lids are vented under the latches and rated to go in with the lid on; Glasslock's own guidance is lid off, same as Bentgo's, even though the base is glass. The full by-maker rule is laid out on microwave, oven and freezer safe containers explained.

Freezer use is cleanly stated on both sets — Bentgo says you can reheat straight from the freezer — and freezing is actually where a light, identical, stackable tray shines, because a freezer column of ten matching rectangles wastes no air. The freezer container roundup compares the formats, and how to freeze meal prep without freezer burn covers the headspace problem a press-on lid makes slightly worse, since it does not pull a seal.

The embossed measurements

The underrated feature on the 3-compartment tray is that the compartments are molded with measurements, and the compartment sizes themselves are the portion: a 2-cup main well and two 1-cup wells. For anyone building meals to a rough macro target, that is a portioning system you cannot forget to use — the tray does the measuring by being the shape it is.

It is not a substitute for a scale when the target is grams of protein rather than cups of food, and it is worth being clear about the error involved: volume and weight are only loosely related for solids, so a packed cup and a loose cup of the same chicken differ meaningfully. Portion control container sizes explained quantifies how far a cup can be off, and how to use a food scale for macros is the five-container Sunday if you want the gram figure. Treat the embossing as a fast approximation that beats eyeballing, which is exactly what it is.

Ten trays is also the right count for the way most people actually prep. Five meals for two people, or ten lunches for one, in a single stack — against a 5-container set, you are not washing mid-week to keep going. That is the quiet reason this line sells.

Who this is for, and who should skip it

Buy the 3-compartment trays if you cook a protein, a carb and a vegetable on Sunday and want them kept apart; your meals travel flat in a bag or straight to a fridge; and weight matters because you carry more than one. Buy the bowls if your food is a grain bowl, a chili, a curry or a big salad — 4 cups divided three ways is the wrong shape for those, and 6.75 cups undivided is the right one. Most people running this line end up owning both, which is clearly the intent.

Skip the line if any of the following is true: your meals are saucy and travel on their side; you reheat in an oven, since nothing here is oven-rated; you want a lid you can microwave on; or you want a container you expect to still be in service in ten years. Each of those points at a different set, and the two most common replacements are below.

What to buy instead

Two honest alternatives, each solving a different one of the Prep line's limits:

  • Rubbermaid Brilliance 10-piece — if the seal is the problem. Rubbermaid states a 100% airtight, leak-proof seal with secure latches, and the lids vent so they can go in the microwave closed. You get five containers instead of ten, each heavier, and no oven use. It is the straight upgrade for a bag that does not stay level. Reviewed on its own, with the set contents and the warranty, on our Rubbermaid Brilliance review.
  • Glasslock 18-piece Oven Safe set — if you want the material fixed too. Four-tab lids with a removable silicone gasket on tempered glass, with the oven series rated to 446°F on the base. Four times the weight, mixed shapes that do not all nest, and gaskets that are not sold separately in the US. The glass vs plastic comparison is the long-form version of that trade.

If you have not decided between divided trays and plain containers at all, best 3-compartment meal prep containers ranks the divided format against itself, and the flagship containers roundup is the whole-category shortlist.

How Meal & Macro picks gear

Researched, compared and scored

Every pick starts with the maker's own product page and manual: the lid, material and care ratings in its exact wording ("leak-proof", "oven safe to 450°F", "top-rack only"), the container-fit and ice-pack arithmetic worked out from published dimensions and the USDA's numbers, and a score on a public rubric for the category that weights the seal, the material and the fit first. Models are compared side by side, so each page lands on one clear pick per use case with the reason stated. Every figure links to where it came from; where the maker's page would not load we cite a retailer and say so.

Scores are editorial judgments built from that documented research. Commissions never set a score or decide a pick. The rubrics and their weights are published.

Questions

Frequently asked

Are Bentgo Prep containers leak-proof?

No, and Bentgo does not claim they are. Both Prep pages describe "custom-fit" clear stackable lids with no leak-proof or airtight wording and no gasket. They hold food reliably while flat. For a stated leak-proof seal you want a latched set — best leak-proof meal prep containers only lists sets whose makers make the claim.

Can Bentgo Prep containers go in the microwave?

The trays and bowls can; the lids cannot. Bentgo's own wording is "Microwave trays only" and "Do not microwave lids". Both sets are also stated safe to reheat from the freezer.

Are Bentgo Prep containers PFAS-free?

Bentgo states both sets are free of PFAS, BPA, vinyl, lead and PVC. That is a label claim from the maker, which is the standard this site holds every material claim to — see best non-toxic food storage containers for how the claims across brands compare, and are plastic meal prep containers safe for what the FDA actually says.

How long do Bentgo Prep containers last?

Bentgo publishes no lifespan and sells no replacement lids, so treat them as a consumable rather than an heirloom: thin polypropylene scratches, clouds and stains with daily use, and hand-washing the lids is Bentgo's own recommendation for extending that. When to replace plastic food containers lists the signs. At ten containers a set, replacing a few a year is a sane plan.

Bentgo Prep trays or Bentgo Prep bowls?

Trays for meals with separate components — protein, carb, vegetable — at 4 cups across three compartments. Bowls for anything mixed or liquid-ish at 6.75 cups: chili, curry, grain bowls, big salads. The bowls are also the lighter of the two at 2.2 oz each, and they nest deeper when empty.
