What the freezer asks of a container
Four things, and they are not the four things a lunch bag asks. First, a shallow shape: the USDA's guidance for leftovers is to divide large amounts into shallow containers so the food cools quickly, because a deep pot of chili sits in the 40–140°F zone for hours while its center cools. Second, an air seal, because freezer burn is dehydration — moisture leaving the food into the air in the container — and the FDA's chart says to overwrap anything frozen longer than two months for that reason. Third, a material rated for the cold and then for the reheat. Fourth, a footprint: a freezer full of round containers is a freezer half full of air.
That is why a silicone portion tray with a steel frame tops the list even though you can't eat from it: it does the shallow-and-fast part better than anything, and the frozen blocks it makes stack like bricks in a bag. The containers you eat from come second.
The block-and-bag workflow
- Cool the batch in the pot with the lid off, or in a sheet pan, until it stops steaming — within the USDA's two hours.
- Ladle into 1-cup or 2-cup tray wells to the fill line. Lid on. Freezer, flat.
- Next day, pop the blocks out. Bag them — a Stasher, a vacuum bag, or a labeled zip bag — pressing the air out.
- Return the tray to service. One tray freezes a week of portions in a week of nights.
- Reheat from a block in the container you eat from: microwave on medium with a splash of water, or oven for the silicone.
The FDA numbers
The FDA's refrigerator and freezer chart is the reference. Freezing at 0°F keeps food safe indefinitely; the times are for quality. Cooked meat and meat dishes: 2 to 3 months. Cooked poultry dishes: 4 to 6 months. Soups and stews: 2 to 3 months. Frozen casseroles: 3 to 4 months. Buyer's guide: freezing glass, plastic and silicone
Glass
Every glass set on this site is rated freezer-safe by its maker. The rules: leave an inch of headroom, freeze cold food not hot, thaw in the fridge, and never take it from the freezer to a hot oven. Details on can you freeze glass containers.
Plastic
Freezer-rated polypropylene goes brittle in the cold; a dropped frozen Bentgo bowl can crack where a Glasslock won't. The latched Rubbermaid lids hold their seal cold better than press-on lids do.
Silicone
Platinum silicone (Stasher, Ziploc Endurables, Souper Cubes) is the one material rated by its makers for the freezer and the oven. It holds odors, so garlic-heavy stews get a baking-soda soak; and it flexes, so a full bag needs to freeze flat before it stands up.
The sealer alternative

Plenty of sites say they packed every container on the list for a week. We didn't, and we say so. What we do instead: read the lid, material and care ratings the maker actually publishes and repeat its wording ("leak-proof", "oven safe to 450°F", "top-rack only"), do the container-fit and ice-pack arithmetic from published dimensions and the USDA's numbers, and score every pick on a public rubric for its category that weights the seal, the material and the fit first. Every figure links to where it came from; where the maker's page would not load we cite a retailer and say so.
Scores are editorial judgments from that documented research, not test results. Commissions never set a score or decide a pick. The rubrics and their weights are published.

Can you freeze food in Glasslock containers?
The maker's distributor FAQ rates the glass for the freezer; leave headroom and cool the food first. The lid gasket can stiffen cold — let it sit a minute before unlatching.
How long does frozen meal prep last?
Safe indefinitely at 0°F per the FDA; for quality, 2–3 months for cooked meat dishes, 4–6 months for cooked poultry dishes, 2–3 months for soups and stews.
Do silicone freezer trays need a lid?
