Cook & Freeze / The picks
The best freezer containers for meal prep, for the freeze-in-portions workflow
The freezer side of batch cooking has its own gear: a tray that freezes portions as blocks, a bag the blocks go in, a sealer for the bulk protein, and the containers that go from 0°F to the microwave. Six ranked on cooling speed, air seal, material range and footprint.

Order is the author's pick for this page's buyer; the score is the rubric's judgment of the product against its whole category, from the maker's page (or the retailer's, where labeled), not tests — the two can disagree, and the write-up says why. The workflow the gear serves
Cook a double batch. Cool it fast in something shallow. Portion it into a tray. Freeze. Pop the blocks out and bag them, labeled with the date. Reheat from a block in whatever you eat from. The tray is the tool that makes the first three steps one step; the bag is what stops the blocks drying out; the sealer is for the protein you freeze raw or in bulk. That workflow is why a tray you can't eat from tops a list of containers — it does the freezer's job better than any container you can. The full method, including labeling and the thaw-in-fridge rule, is on how to freeze meal prep without freezer burn.
Cool fast: the USDA's reason for shallow
Freezer burn is an air problem
Freezer burn is dehydration: moisture leaving the food into air trapped in the container, refreezing as frost on the lid. The FDA's storage chart tells you to overwrap meat frozen longer than two months for exactly that reason. The fix is less air: a bag with the air pressed out (Stasher's Pinch-Loc, or a zip bag), or a vacuum sealer that removes it. A rigid container with an inch of headroom has an inch of air in it; it's fine for a month and worse than a bag for three. That is why the bag and the sealer outrank the glass and plastic here, and why the vacuum math is on vacuum sealer vs freezer bags.
How long, by the FDA
At 0°F food is safe indefinitely; the FDA's times are for quality. Cooked meat and meat dishes 2–3 months, cooked poultry dishes 4–6 months, soups and stews 2–3 months, frozen casseroles 3–4 months, raw chicken parts 9 months, raw ground meat 3–4 months. Write the date on the bag. The full chart is on how long meal prep lasts in the freezer.

What the spec page supports
- Portions frozen as blocks you can bag — the tray is reusable, the freezer space isn't wasted
- Steel frame means no sloshing on the way to the freezer
- Lifetime warranty on a silicone product is rare
Where it falls short
- Four cups per tray; a big chili batch needs three trays
- Up to 24 hours to freeze solid per the maker
- The lid is snug, not sealed — freezer only, not transport
Skip this if…
…you want the container to also be the lunch box — this is a freezer tool, and the blocks go into something else to travel.

Stasher Half Gallon Silicone Bag

What the spec page supports
- Lies flat in the freezer like a zip bag, then goes in the dishwasher
- A stated leak-free seal, which no disposable freezer bag claims
- Sous vide and oven rated to 425°F
Where it falls short
- Half a gallon is one bag; filling a freezer means buying several at a premium
- The seal needs the air pressed out and the full length pinched — a slower close than a zipper
- Holds odors; needs a baking-soda soak after fish
Skip this if…
…you freeze forty portions at once — the per-bag price makes a vacuum sealer the cheaper bulk tool.

- No leak-proof claim; not a bag-on-its-side container
- Floppy walls make it awkward to eat from
- Silicone holds garlic and curry smells longer than glass

Glasslock 18-piece Oven Safe Set (11292)
Four-tab latching lids with a silicone gasket on tempered glass that the oven series rates for the oven (base only). The set every 'glass vs plastic' argument ends up recommending, with one honest gap: the maker's US page publishes almost no care specs.

What the spec page supports
- Latching, gasketed lids — the design that actually survives a sideways bag
- Oven-rated base on the oven series (the OVEN SAFE mark is on the glass)
- Nine sizes, three shapes, every lid the same locking design
Where it falls short
- The US maker page publishes set contents and little else; the care wording comes from a distributor FAQ, labeled as such
- Gaskets are not sold separately in the US, so a torn seal means a new lid
- Mixed shapes: the rectangles nest, the rounds and squares don't join the stack
Skip this if…
…you want the lid microwaved on — Glasslock's own guidance is lid off, and a vented plastic set (Rubbermaid Brilliance) is the microwave-with-lid answer.

Where it falls short

- Set contents weren't readable on the maker's page for us
- Latches are the moving part; no replacement lid program we could find

Buyer's guide: material by job
Silicone
The one material rated by its makers for both 0°F and a hot oven: Souper Cubes to 415°F (trays only), Stasher and Ziploc Endurables to 425°F. Flexible, so blocks pop out and bags lie flat. Holds odors; a baking-soda soak after fish.
Glass
Every set on this site is freezer-rated. Headroom, cool first, no freezer-to-hot-oven, thaw in the fridge — can you freeze glass containers has the three rules. Heavy, and a full glass container is a container tied up for a month.
Plastic
Light and cheap, brittle at 0°F, and press-on lids pop as food expands. Latched (Rubbermaid) holds its seal cold. Disposable trays are fine for a month of single lunches — the trays you don't mind losing are on best disposable containers.
Vacuum bags
The least air and the best long-term quality, for a machine on the counter and bags you buy on a roll. Right for bulk protein and a freezer you fill quarterly; wrong for tonight's chili.
How Meal & Macro scores gear
Units we claim to have tested: 0
Plenty of sites say they packed every container on the list for a week. We didn't, and we say so. What we do instead: read the lid, material and care ratings the maker actually publishes and repeat its wording ("leak-proof", "oven safe to 450°F", "top-rack only"), do the container-fit and ice-pack arithmetic from published dimensions and the USDA's numbers, and score every pick on a public rubric for its category that weights the seal, the material and the fit first. Every figure links to where it came from; where the maker's page would not load we cite a retailer and say so.
Scores are editorial judgments from that documented research, not test results. Commissions never set a score or decide a pick. The rubrics and their weights are published.
Questions
Frequently asked
What containers are best for freezing meal prep?
A silicone portion tray to freeze in blocks, then bags with the air out. If you want to freeze and reheat in one vessel, freezer-rated silicone (Ziploc Endurables) or latched plastic (Rubbermaid Brilliance).
How long does frozen meal prep last?
Safe indefinitely at 0°F per the FDA; for quality, 2–3 months for cooked meat dishes and soups, 4–6 months for cooked poultry dishes.
Can you freeze meal prep in glass containers?
Yes — every glass set here is rated for it. Leave an inch of headroom, cool the food first, thaw in the fridge.
Is a vacuum sealer worth it for meal prep?
For bulk protein and freezing more than a month at a time, yes. For a week of chili, a tray and a bag do the job. The sealers, ranked.
