Who actually needs disposables
Three people. The one whose lunch lives in a shared fridge and a shared locker room, where containers migrate. The one who cooks for a client, a teammate or a parent and isn't going back for the box. And the one who freezes a month at a time and doesn't want a month of glass tied up in the freezer. For all three, the right container is the one that costs so little you don't have to think about it — and the mistake is buying it for everything else.
A disposable tray is a worse container in every way but price: a press-on lid with no gasket, plastic thin enough to flex when full, and no oven rating. Used as intended — one trip, maybe five — that's fine. Used as a daily set, it's a false economy against a real set that lasts years.
How many cycles before it's disposable
The makers don't publish a cycle count and we haven't run one, so treat this as a description of the design rather than a test. Freshware's trays are the thinnest here — the lid presses on, the tray flexes, and a hot dishwasher cycle warps the lid so it no longer seats. Bentgo's trays and bowls are heavier (3 oz and 2.2 oz per container by the maker's figures), with lids the maker says to hand wash, and they sit between disposable and permanent: a tray you'd use for a season, not a year. The Sistema box is a permanent container that happens to be cheap, which is the honest answer for anyone who loses one a month.

Buyer's guide: disposable, but not single-use
The word disposable is doing two jobs. It can mean single-use, which none of these need to be, or it can mean cheap enough to not chase, which all of them are. Rinse a Freshware tray and it goes another round; the maker rates it for the dishwasher. The point is that when it doesn't come back, nothing was lost. Buy the 21-pack, keep ten in service and eleven in the cabinet, and the day a coworker "borrows" one is a non-event.
If the lunches are going into a bag on their side, none of these seal for it — read the leak-proof list and accept that leak-proof and cheap don't overlap much. The Sistema box is the closest thing to both.

Plenty of sites say they packed every container on the list for a week. We didn't, and we say so. What we do instead: read the lid, material and care ratings the maker actually publishes and repeat its wording ("leak-proof", "oven safe to 450°F", "top-rack only"), do the container-fit and ice-pack arithmetic from published dimensions and the USDA's numbers, and score every pick on a public rubric for its category that weights the seal, the material and the fit first. Every figure links to where it came from; where the maker's page would not load we cite a retailer and say so.
Scores are editorial judgments from that documented research, not test results. Commissions never set a score or decide a pick. The rubrics and their weights are published.

Are disposable meal prep containers microwave safe?
Freshware and Bentgo both rate their trays microwave-safe (Bentgo: trays only, never lids). Lid off, medium power, and don't run oil-heavy food on high in a thin tray.
Can I reuse disposable meal prep containers?
Yes; the makers rate them for the dishwasher. They warp before they break, and a warped lid stops seating — that's the retirement signal.
What's the cheapest way to do a month of freezer meals?
Freeze in a silicone tray, bag the blocks, and thaw into the container you eat from. It uses one tray and a few bags instead of thirty containers. The method is on best containers for the freezer.
