Cook & Freeze / Head to head
Vacuum sealer vs freezer bags: the air is the cost, and here's the arithmetic
Freezer burn is moisture leaving food into the air in the package. A vacuum bag has almost none; a zip bag has some; a reusable silicone bag has what you couldn't press out. Whether the machine pays for itself depends on how many months, not how many meals.

The verdict
What freezer burn is
Dehydration. Water in the food sublimates into any air in the package and refreezes as frost on the inside of the bag; what's left behind is the gray, dry patch on the chicken. It is a quality problem, not a safety one — the USDA says food kept at 0°F is safe indefinitely — but it is the reason the FDA's chart gives quality windows at all, and why it says to overwrap meat frozen longer than two months. Less air, less burn. A vacuum sealer removes nearly all of it; a zip bag pressed flat removes most; a rigid container with headroom removes none.
Months, not meals
The FDA's freezer windows for cooked food are short — 2 to 3 months for cooked meat dishes and soups, 4 to 6 for cooked poultry dishes — and a pressed-flat bag holds quality across them fine. The windows for raw meat are long — 9 months for chicken parts, 6 to 12 for steaks, 3 to 4 for ground meat — and that is where a vacuum bag's near-zero air pays off: it's the difference between a March chicken breast that's good in August and one that's edible. The decision is how long the food will be in there, not how much of it.
The per-meal arithmetic
We don't print prices — Amazon's change daily and the button on every pick checks today's — so this is the shape of the calculation, not a number. The sealer's cost is the machine plus bag rolls that are used once; FoodSaver's FM2000 takes 11-inch rolls and ships with one. A reusable silicone bag (Stasher's half gallon: 64 fl oz, platinum silicone, dishwasher, oven to 425°F) costs more than a box of zip bags and is used for years. Disposable zip bags cost the least per week and the most per year. Divide the machine by the number of bags you'll seal in two years; if the answer is less than a zip bag, the machine was cheap. For most people freezing cooked meals weekly, it isn't; for anyone buying a quarter cow, it is.
The sealers themselves are ranked on best vacuum sealer for meal prep; the freezer containers, bags and trays on best freezer containers.

What the spec page supports
- Drip tray lifts out and goes in the dishwasher
- Takes the standard 11-inch roll
- Accessory hose for canisters and zipper bags
Where it falls short
- No moist/dry mode or pulse in the wording we could read
- No roll storage or cutter listed — you cut bags with scissors
- The maker's page blocked our reader
Skip this if…
…you seal marinated or wet food weekly — a moist mode (Nesco, Anova) is the feature you'll miss.

Stasher Half Gallon Silicone Bag

What the spec page supports
- Lies flat in the freezer like a zip bag, then goes in the dishwasher
- A stated leak-free seal, which no disposable freezer bag claims
- Sous vide and oven rated to 425°F
Where it falls short
- Half a gallon is one bag; filling a freezer means buying several at a premium
- The seal needs the air pressed out and the full length pinched — a slower close than a zipper
- Holds odors; needs a baking-soda soak after fish
Skip this if…
…you freeze forty portions at once — the per-bag price makes a vacuum sealer the cheaper bulk tool.

What the spec page supports
- Portions frozen as blocks you can bag — the tray is reusable, the freezer space isn't wasted
- Steel frame means no sloshing on the way to the freezer
- Lifetime warranty on a silicone product is rare
Where it falls short
- Four cups per tray; a big chili batch needs three trays
- Up to 24 hours to freeze solid per the maker
- The lid is snug, not sealed — freezer only, not transport

…you want the container to also be the lunch box — this is a freezer tool, and the blocks go into something else to travel.

How Meal & Macro scores gear
Units we claim to have tested: 0
Plenty of sites say they packed every container on the list for a week. We didn't, and we say so. What we do instead: read the lid, material and care ratings the maker actually publishes and repeat its wording ("leak-proof", "oven safe to 450°F", "top-rack only"), do the container-fit and ice-pack arithmetic from published dimensions and the USDA's numbers, and score every pick on a public rubric for its category that weights the seal, the material and the fit first. Every figure links to where it came from; where the maker's page would not load we cite a retailer and say so.
Scores are editorial judgments from that documented research, not test results. Commissions never set a score or decide a pick. The rubrics and their weights are published.
Questions
Frequently asked
Does vacuum sealing prevent freezer burn?
It removes the air that causes it, so nearly. The FDA's quality windows are the target; vacuum-sealed food reaches the long end of them.
Are freezer bags good enough for meal prep?
For cooked meals eaten within the FDA's 2–3 month window, pressed flat, yes. Freeze in blocks first and they're nearly as good as vacuum.
Can you vacuum seal cooked meals?
Yes. Freeze them solid first if the sealer lacks a moist mode, so liquid doesn't reach the seal strip.

We don't own or use-test this gear and we don't pretend to. Materials, capacities, seals and care ratings come from the maker's own product pages (linked on every product) or, where the maker's page would not load, from a retailer listing we label as such. Food-safety numbers are quoted from the USDA and FDA pages linked above. Where a figure isn't published we say so. Prices are set by Amazon and change often, so we don't print them.
