The lid rule
A backpack stands up. Everything inside lies against your back, on its side, with the weight of the containers above pushing down and the motion of walking shaking it. A press-on lid — Pyrex Simply Store, the Bentgo Prep trays, Anchor TrueSeal — seals for a fridge and for a tote carried flat; on its side under load it weeps at the corners, and a divided tray lets the sauce cross compartments. The containers that belong in a backpack are the ones whose makers use the word leak-proof: Glasslock's four-tab gasket, Snapware, Rubbermaid Brilliance, Sistema's clips, W&P's screw-top. Even then, pack the containers upright at the bottom against the back panel, ice packs in front, and don't overfill past the line — a two-latch lid lifts at a corner when the contents press on it.
Weight, and where it sits
Four glass containers with lids run toward four pounds before food.
