Ello DuraGlass review: five identical glass rounds, a 450°F rating, and one lid rule to remember

Ello publishes two things most glass sets do not: an oven temperature and a leak-proof claim. Both come with the same caveat, and that caveat is the whole review — the lid never goes in heat.

The verdict in one paragraph

This is a good set bought for the wrong reason more often than any other glass container on this site. People buy it because it is glass and it looks tidy; it is actually worth buying for two specific published specs — a leak-proof lid with sealing snaps, and an oven rating of 450°F — and worth skipping if your meals are dinner-sized or if you want to reheat with the lid on. Everything below is Ello's own published wording, because this site does not own or test gear and says so.

What Ello actually publishes

Glass-container pages are usually thin. Ello's is not, and the figures below are the ones that decide whether the set works for you:

SpecEllo's published wordingWhat it means in practice
Set contents"Set of five 3.4 cup round glass containers with airtight locking lids"A five-day week, one container per day, all the same size
Lid & seal"Leak-proof lid with sealing snaps for on-the-go"Rides on its side in a bag — the claim most glass sets will not make
Oven"Oven safe up to 450 degrees F without lid"A real oven temperature, published — rare in this category
Microwave"Oven and microwave safe without lid"Lid off, every single time
FreezerFreezer safeBatch, freeze, thaw, reheat in the same dish
MaterialGlass with a protective silicone sleeve; "BPA/BPS free"The sleeve is the reason it survives a commute
Sleeve"Silicone sleeve protects glass and tabletops and provides a no-slip grip"Grip when hot, no clatter in a bag, and water to shake out after washing

Every quotation is from Ello's own product page for the five-piece 3.4-cup round set. Ello does not publish a lid warranty for this set, and we do not infer one.

The lid rule, and why it matters daily

"Oven and microwave safe without lid" is a six-word sentence that shapes the whole experience of owning these. It means:

  • Every reheat is a two-step reheat. Unsnap the lid, microwave the glass, splatter the inside of the microwave, or cover it with something else. There is no vent and no valve.
  • The 450°F oven rating is for the glass only. Which is still genuinely useful — you can roast or bake in the container you stored in, and almost no competing glass set publishes a temperature at all. Pyrex Simply Store states no oven rating on its own page; Bentgo and OXO say oven safe without a number.
  • The snaps are load-bearing. The leak-proof claim depends on them. Treat them the way you would any plastic hinge, and do not put a frozen ice pack on top of a snapped lid for eight hours.

If reheating with the lid on is a daily need rather than a nice-to-have, the sets that solve it are Rubbermaid Brilliance glass (vents under the latches) and the Bentgo Signature Glass set (steam valve in a glass lid). The lid-rule table for every material on the site is on microwave, oven and freezer safe containers explained.

The silicone sleeve: the real differentiator

Nobody buys a glass container for its sleeve, and the sleeve is the reason this set works. Three things follow from it:

It survives a bag. A bare glass rim chips against another container's rim; a sleeved one does not. This is the practical difference between a glass set that lives in a fridge and a glass set that commutes.

It is a hot-dish grip. Pull a 450°F dish out of an oven and the sleeve is where you hold it — the same reason the W&P Porter bowls use one.

It holds water. This is the honest cost. Run the set through a dishwasher and water sits between the sleeve and the glass; it needs peeling back or a shake-out, every wash. Over a year that is a small, real annoyance, and it is the one thing an owner complains about that the spec page will not tell you.

Is 3.4 cups the right size?

It is a lunch. Specifically, 3.4 cups is roughly a cup of rice, a palm-sized portion of protein and a cup of vegetables with a little headroom — the size that suits a cut or a maintenance day and runs short on a bulk. For comparison, the sets this site ranks alongside it sit at 4 cups (Snapware squares, Bentgo Prep trays), 4.2 cups (Sistema KLIP IT) and 6.3 cups at the top of the Glasslock range.

The shape costs you more than the volume does. Five rounds take noticeably more fridge shelf than five rectangles of the same capacity, because the gaps between circles are wasted. If fridge space is the constraint rather than portion size, a rectangular set is the better buy and the argument is on best stackable meal prep containers. The portion arithmetic itself is on what size meal prep containers do I need.

Who should buy something else

Three readers should close this page and buy a different set:

  1. You want one set to cover everything. Nine containers in three shapes from 0.7 to 6.3 cups — that is the Glasslock 18-piece oven-safe set, with four-tab latches and a removable gasket on every lid. It is less tidy and its US page publishes much less detail, which the page itself admits.
  2. You reheat at your desk with no cover. Buy the lid you can leave on: the Bentgo Signature Glass set has silicone-sealed glass lids with steam valves, and Rubbermaid Brilliance glass has vents under the latches.
  3. You carry five meals at once. Five sleeved glass rounds in a bag is a genuinely heavy load. Plastic trays at 3 oz each exist for exactly this: best 3-compartment meal prep containers.

And if you came here comparing it against the obvious alternative, that comparison has its own page: Ello vs Pyrex.

What the spec page supports

  • Five of the same size — one stack, one lid to learn
  • Silicone sleeve takes the knocks a bare glass dish would chip on
  • A stated 450°F oven rating, which most glass sets don't publish

Where it falls short

  • 3.4 cups is a lunch, not a dinner-plus-leftovers container
  • The sleeve traps water in the dishwasher and needs a shake-out
  • Rounds waste fridge space compared with rectangles

Skip this if…

…you cook big-batch grain bowls that need 5+ cups per meal — these are lunch-sized rounds.

What the spec page supports

  • Latching, gasketed lids — the design that actually survives a sideways bag
  • Oven-rated base on the oven series (the OVEN SAFE mark is on the glass)
  • Nine sizes, three shapes, every lid the same locking design

Where it falls short

  • The US maker page publishes set contents and little else; the care wording comes from a distributor FAQ, labeled as such
  • Gaskets are not sold separately in the US, so a torn seal means a new lid
  • Mixed shapes: the rectangles nest, the rounds and squares don't join the stack

Skip this if…

…you want the lid microwaved on — Glasslock's own guidance is lid off, and a vented plastic set (Rubbermaid Brilliance) is the microwave-with-lid answer.

What the spec page supports

  • Glass lid with a silicone seal and a steam valve — reheat with the lid on
  • Borosilicate handles fridge-to-oven better than soda-lime by the maker's own description
  • Nothing plastic to stain; the whole set goes in the dishwasher

Where it falls short

  • Five containers, and glass lids add weight to a lunch bag
  • No oven temperature limit is published
  • Glass lids chip if dropped; plastic lids bounce

Skip this if…

…your lunch bag is a backpack you sling around — a glass lid is the heaviest lid on this page, and the weight adds up over five meals.

How Meal & Macro picks gear

Researched, compared and scored

Every pick starts with the maker's own product page and manual: the lid, material and care ratings in its exact wording ("leak-proof", "oven safe to 450°F", "top-rack only"), the container-fit and ice-pack arithmetic worked out from published dimensions and the USDA's numbers, and a score on a public rubric for the category that weights the seal, the material and the fit first. Models are compared side by side, so each page lands on one clear pick per use case with the reason stated. Every figure links to where it came from; where the maker's page would not load we cite a retailer and say so.

Scores are editorial judgments built from that documented research. Commissions never set a score or decide a pick. The rubrics and their weights are published.

Questions

Frequently asked

Is Ello DuraGlass oven safe?

The glass is: Ello publishes "oven safe up to 450 degrees F without lid". The lid is not, and neither is the silicone sleeve rated for the oven in Ello's wording — take both off before it goes in.

Can Ello DuraGlass containers go in the microwave with the lid on?

No. Ello's wording is "oven and microwave safe without lid", and there is no vent or steam valve in the lid. If lid-on reheating matters, the Bentgo Signature Glass set and Rubbermaid Brilliance glass both publish a vented or valved lid.

Are Ello DuraGlass lids leak-proof?

Ello calls them a "leak-proof lid with sealing snaps for on-the-go", which is a stronger claim than most glass sets make — Pyrex Simply Store, by contrast, uses press-on lids with no latch. The snaps are the mechanism, so they are also the wear point.

How big are Ello DuraGlass meal prep containers?

The round set is five identical 3.4-cup containers — a lunch-sized portion each, five days of them. That is smaller than a 4-cup Snapware square and much smaller than the 6.3-cup rectangle at the top of the Glasslock set.
