When a bowl beats a box
Any meal where the components are supposed to touch. Chili, curry, a grain bowl with dressing, oatmeal, a salad you toss at lunch. A divided tray keeps the sauce off the rice until noon, which is exactly wrong for those; a rectangle works but leaves the corners dry. A bowl also reheats more evenly in a microwave than a rectangle, because there are no corners for the microwave to overcook.
The trade is fridge space. Rounds waste the corners of a shelf that rectangles fill. That is why the best bowl sets are same-size sets that stack as one column — five Ello rounds take the footprint of one — and why a mixed assortment with two rounds and three rectangles ends up as two half-stacks.
Bowl sizes for a training meal
A grain bowl for someone who trains is 3 to 4 cups: a cup of cooked rice or quinoa, 5 to 6 oz of protein, a cup of vegetables, dressing. The 3.4-cup Ello and the 3-cup W&P are lunch bowls. Buyer's guide: bowls and the freezer
Bowls are the meals most people freeze — chili, stew, curry — and a bowl full of frozen chili is a bowl you can't use for a week. The workflow that fixes it is the Souper Cubes tray on this list: freeze the chili in 1-cup blocks, bag the blocks, and the bowls stay in rotation. The USDA's reason for shallow portions is cooling speed; the FDA's quality window for frozen soups and stews is 2 to 3 months. Both are on best containers for the freezer.
Reheating a bowl: lid off or vented, medium power, stir halfway. Glass bowls reheat slower and more evenly than plastic; plastic bowls stain from tomato. If the bowl is your Thursday chili every week, glass.

What we do instead: read the lid, material and care ratings the maker actually publishes and repeat its wording ("leak-proof", "oven safe to 450°F", "top-rack only"), do the container-fit and ice-pack arithmetic from published dimensions and the USDA's numbers, and score every pick on a public rubric for its category that weights the seal, the material and the fit first. Every figure links to where it came from; where the maker's page would not load we cite a retailer and say so.
Scores are editorial judgments from that documented research, not test results. Commissions never set a score or decide a pick. The rubrics and their weights are published.

Are glass or plastic bowls better for meal prep?
Glass for anything with tomato or turmeric (no stains, no odors) and for the oven; plastic for weight and a bigger bowl for the money. Same trade as every container: kitchen versus commute.
Can you microwave a meal prep bowl with the lid on?
Not the bowls on this page. Ello: lid off. Bentgo: trays only, never lids. W&P and Pyrex: remove the lid. Use a paper towel.
What size bowl for a meal prep lunch?
3 to 4 cups for a lunch-sized grain bowl; 6 to 7 cups for a dinner bowl or a lunch you want room to stir in.
