Containers / Head to head
Ello vs Pyrex: a sealed, sleeved lunch round against a nine-size glass assortment
Both are glass. One is five identical 3.4-cup rounds with a snap-sealing lid and a 450°F oven rating; the other is nine dishes from 1 to 7 cups with press-on lids and no oven rating at all. They are not competing for the same job.

The short version
These two sets get compared constantly because they sit next to each other on a shelf and both say "glass". They are built for opposite situations. Ello sells a lunch set: one repeated lunch-sized round, sealed, sleeved, designed to be carried. Pyrex Simply Store sells a kitchen set: nine sizes from a quarter-cup of sauce to a batch of chilli, with the simplest possible lid, designed to live in a fridge.
If you buy Ello expecting it to store half an onion and a litre of stock, you have bought five lunch boxes. If you buy Pyrex expecting to carry soup in a backpack, you have bought a press-on lid and a problem. Almost every complaint about either set traces back to that mismatch rather than to a defect.
If it is the Ello set specifically you are weighing up — the 450°F rating, the sealing snaps and what the silicone sleeve costs you — that is covered on its own page: the Ello DuraGlass review.

The lid is the whole difference
Strip everything else away and this comparison is one sentence: Ello will print the words leak-proof and Pyrex will not.
Ello's lid snaps down onto the rim — "sealing snaps for on-the-go" is the maker's own framing, and on-the-go is the point. Pyrex Simply Store uses a press-on lid, which Pyrex describes as airtight. Airtight and leak-proof are not synonyms: a press-on lid will hold air in a fridge perfectly well and will still weep if the container goes on its side with dressing in it. That is not Pyrex being careless; it is a 30-year-old design whose job is a fridge shelf.
So the honest decision rule is the orientation of the container in transit. Flat in a tote with the lid facing up, Pyrex is fine for years. On its side in a backpack, with sauce, buy the snapping lid. The whole category ranked on that single spec is on best leak-proof meal prep containers, and the latching alternatives to both of these are on Glasslock vs Pyrex.
What the silicone sleeve actually does
The sleeve is the most visible difference and the most misunderstood. Three real effects, one real cost:
- It stops chipping at the rim and base, which is where glass containers actually die — not dramatic breakage but a chipped edge that then cracks on a thermal change.
- It stops the clatter and the slide. Five bare glass rounds in a bag knock against each other; sleeved ones do not, and they do not skate across a desk.
- It insulates your hand from a dish out of a 450°F oven slightly longer than bare glass — not enough to skip a cloth, but enough to notice.
- The cost: it traps water in the dishwasher. Ello's sleeves come out of a cycle with a puddle behind them, and they need pulling off occasionally to clean under. Pyrex has no such step because there is nothing to pull off.
Five of one size vs nine of nine
3.4 cups is a deliberate number. It is a maintenance lunch — roughly 6 oz of cooked protein, a cup of carbs and a cup of vegetables, plus the headroom the lid needs. Five of them is a working week. That is the entire proposition, and it is a good one if meal prep is the use case.
Pyrex's nine sizes are a different proposition entirely: a 1-cup round for pesto, two 3-cup rectangles for lunches, a 7-cup round for a batch of soup. Mixed sizes do not stack as one column and they do not nest as one pile, which is the trade for having the right dish for everything. If you want five matching lunches andan assortment, that is two purchases, and most kitchens end up making both. The arithmetic for which size to buy first is on what size meal prep containers do I need.
Oven and thermal shock
Ello publishes a number — 450°F without the lid — and Pyrex Simply Store publishes nothing for the oven on this set's page. A published number is worth a lot here, because "glass" tells you nothing: soda-lime tempered glass and borosilicate behave differently under sudden temperature change, and the only trustworthy guide is what the maker will commit to in print.
One asymmetry in Pyrex's favour: its two-year warranty explicitly covers the plastic lids, which is where every glass set fails first. Ello publishes no warranty term on the product page at all. If a lid cracks in month fourteen, that difference is the only thing that matters.
Which one, by use
- Five lunches carried to work in a bag: Ello. The snapping lid and the sleeve are both bought for exactly this.
- Leftovers, sauces, half-vegetables, batch cooking: Pyrex. Nine sizes, and nothing to pull off in the dishwasher.
- Fridge-to-oven roasting in the same dish: Ello, because 450°F is printed. Pyrex Simply Store does not claim it.
- Reheating daily with the lid on: neither. Both say lid off or lid lifted; the vented and valved sets, and which part of each container carries which rating, are covered on microwave, oven and freezer safe containers explained.
- Weight is the constraint: neither — they are both glass. The plastic case is made on glass vs plastic meal prep containers.

What the spec page supports
- Five of the same size — one stack, one lid to learn
- Silicone sleeve takes the knocks a bare glass dish would chip on
- A stated 450°F oven rating, which most glass sets don't publish
Where it falls short
- 3.4 cups is a lunch, not a dinner-plus-leftovers container
- The sleeve traps water in the dishwasher and needs a shake-out
- Rounds waste fridge space compared with rectangles

- Mixed sizes mean the rectangles and rounds don't stack as one tower

How Meal & Macro picks gear
Researched, compared and scored
Every pick starts with the maker's own product page and manual: the lid, material and care ratings in its exact wording ("leak-proof", "oven safe to 450°F", "top-rack only"), the container-fit and ice-pack arithmetic worked out from published dimensions and the USDA's numbers, and a score on a public rubric for the category that weights the seal, the material and the fit first. Models are compared side by side, so each page lands on one clear pick per use case with the reason stated. Every figure links to where it came from; where the maker's page would not load we cite a retailer and say so.
Scores are editorial judgments built from that documented research. Commissions never set a score or decide a pick. The rubrics and their weights are published.
Questions
Frequently asked
Is Ello better than Pyrex?
For carrying food, yes — Ello publishes a leak-proof snapping lid and a silicone sleeve, and Pyrex Simply Store uses a press-on lid. For general kitchen storage, no: Pyrex gives you nine sizes from 1 to 7 cups and a 2-year warranty that covers the lids.
Can Ello DuraGlass go in the oven?
Yes, without the lid — Ello publishes "oven safe up to 450 degrees F without lid". Pyrex Simply Store publishes no oven rating on that set's page, so treat it as fridge, freezer and microwave gear.
Do Pyrex Simply Store lids leak?
They are press-on and Pyrex calls them airtight, not leak-proof. In practice that means fine upright in a fridge or a tote, not something to trust on its side with soup or dressing.
Does the Ello silicone sleeve come off?
Yes, and it should come off occasionally. The sleeve traps water in the dishwasher and food can work under the rim, so pull it off every few washes and clean underneath.
