The best meal prep containers for bodybuilding: sized for six meals, not for lunch

Five or six meals a day means thirty containers a week, portions bigger than a normal lunch, and a set that survives being reheated every single day. Six ranked on capacity, set size, seal and reheat rating.

The arithmetic: 30 containers a week

This page exists because bodybuilding breaks the assumptions every other container roundup makes. Five or six feedings a day, six days prepped ahead, is thirty to thirty-six containers in rotation. That changes the buying decision in four specific ways:

  • Set size stops being a nicety. A three-pack is irrelevant. Ten identical vessels is the minimum useful unit, and twenty is better.
  • Weight compounds. A glass container with a lid runs around 1.5 lb; six of them in a bag is 9 lb before the food. Bentgo's trays are 3 oz.
  • Portions are bigger. 8 oz of cooked chicken plus 250 g of rice plus vegetables is 3.5 to 4 cups. A 2-cup container is a snack at this volume.
  • Reheat cycles multiply. Thirty reheats a week is roughly 1,500 a year, and that is what kills thin plastic.

The general-purpose ranking, for someone eating three meals a day, is on best meal prep containers; the deficit version, where the container is a portioning tool, is on best meal prep containers for weight loss. This page is the surplus version.

How big is a bodybuilding portion

Work it from the food, not the container. A 50 g protein feeding is about 8 oz of cooked chicken breast, which occupies roughly 1.5 cups. Add 250 g of cooked rice — about 1.5 cups — and a cup of vegetables and you are at 4 cups. That is the number to hold the sets against:

Rubbermaid Brilliance 10-pieceMixed set10LightAirtight, leak-proof latches
Freshware 21-pack24 oz (3 cups), 12-6-621 + lidsThin PPPress-on, no claim

Every capacity and claim quoted from the maker's own page, except the Freshware compartment split, which comes from the retailer listing (labeled in Sources).

The Freshware trays at 3 cups are the honest casualty of that arithmetic: they are excellent value and slightly too small for a real bulking meal, which is why they sit last here and first on best disposable meal prep containers. The Bentgo bowls at 6.75 cups are the only set that will hold a genuinely large surplus feeding without pressing the lid.

Reheated daily, for years

Thin polypropylene reheated daily clouds, scratches, stains and eventually warps enough that the lid stops seating. Nothing on any maker's page will tell you when; what the pages do tell you is the rating, and the ratings split cleanly.

Reheat the base only. Bentgo: "Microwave trays only". Bentgo bowls: "Do not microwave lids, only the trays are microwavable". Sistema: "Microwave safe (without lid)". That is the dominant pattern in plastic, and it is not a footnote — a lid microwaved against the maker's instruction is how a seal dies.

Reheat and bake. Glasslock's tempered glass takes an oven, which matters if you cook in batch and reheat in a toaster oven rather than a microwave. Glass will outlast every plastic set here by years, and it costs you about 1.5 lb per meal carried. The full trade is on glass vs plastic meal prep containers, and the base-versus-lid ratings across the whole site are on microwave, oven and freezer safe containers explained.

Divided or single, and why it matters

Divided trays are the default recommendation for this diet for one practical reason: they keep the protein dry. Eight ounces of chicken sitting in rice absorbs moisture and reheats to a different texture, and at six meals a day texture is the difference between eating the food and skipping it. Bentgo's embossed measurements are a second, smaller advantage — they let you portion by eye when you are prepping thirty containers at speed and do not want a scale on every one.

Single-compartment vessels win in two cases: a genuinely large portion that a divided tray cannot hold (the 6.75-cup bowls), and anything wet — chili, curry, overnight oats — where division is pointless and a real seal matters instead. That is where the latched sets earn their place, and where best leak-proof meal prep containers is the page to read.

One more thing worth planning at this volume: the scale. Portioning thirty containers is the job a big-capacity scale exists for, and the bulk-cook-sized options are on best food scale for macros.

What the spec page supports

  • Latching, gasketed lids — the design that actually survives a sideways bag
  • Oven-rated base on the oven series (the OVEN SAFE mark is on the glass)
  • Nine sizes, three shapes, every lid the same locking design

Where it falls short

  • The US maker page publishes set contents and little else; the care wording comes from a distributor FAQ, labeled as such
  • Gaskets are not sold separately in the US, so a torn seal means a new lid
  • Mixed shapes: the rectangles nest, the rounds and squares don't join the stack

Skip this if…

…you want the lid microwaved on — Glasslock's own guidance is lid off, and a vented plastic set (Rubbermaid Brilliance) is the microwave-with-lid answer.

Buyer's guide: three questions

Bulk or cut?

Bulking: the 6.75-cup Bentgo bowls, or two Sistema packs if you want a seal. Cutting: the 4-cup divided trays, and portion by weight rather than by eye.

Does the food travel, or live in a fridge at work?

Traveling in a bag: latched and gasketed — Sistema, Rubbermaid or Glasslock. Carried flat and put straight in a fridge: the Bentgo Prep trays, which is why their missing leak claim does not cost them the top spot.

How many meals a day, actually?

Four or fewer: a normal 10-piece set is plenty and the general ranking applies. Five or six: buy twenty vessels, not ten, and plan the bag as well — the four-meal carriers are on best meal prep bags and the training-day plan is on meal prep for the gym.

How Meal & Macro scores gear

Units we claim to have tested: 0

Plenty of sites say they packed every container on the list for a week. We didn't, and we say so. What we do instead: read the lid, material and care ratings the maker actually publishes and repeat its wording ("leak-proof", "oven safe to 450°F", "top-rack only"), do the container-fit and ice-pack arithmetic from published dimensions and the USDA's numbers, and score every pick on a public rubric for its category that weights the seal, the material and the fit first. Every figure links to where it came from; where the maker's page would not load we cite a retailer and say so.

Scores are editorial judgments from that documented research, not test results. Commissions never set a score or decide a pick. The rubrics and their weights are published.

Questions

Frequently asked

What size meal prep containers do bodybuilders use?

About 4 cups for a normal feeding — 8 oz of cooked chicken is roughly 1.5 cups, plus 1.5 cups of rice and a cup of vegetables. On a bulk, 6 to 7 cups. A 2-cup container is a snack at this intake.

How many meal prep containers do I need for six meals a day?

Thirty for a five-day prep, thirty-six for six days. That means buying in tens or twenties, and it is the main reason the 10-piece and 21-piece sets lead this page over any three-pack.

Are glass or plastic containers better for bodybuilding?

Plastic, for most people, on weight alone: six glass containers and lids are around 9 lb before the food. Glass wins if the containers live in a fridge at home and get reheated daily for years, because tempered glass does not cloud, stain or warp.

Can you meal prep six days of food at once?

Only with the freezer. The USDA gives cooked meat and poultry 3 to 4 days refrigerated, so days four to six go in the freezer on prep day and move to the fridge the night before.

Do divided containers matter for bodybuilding?

They keep protein out of the carbohydrate, which changes the reheated texture — and at six meals a day, texture decides whether the food gets eaten. For wet meals like chili, division is pointless and a real seal matters more.
