Order is the author's pick for this page's buyer; the score is the rubric's judgment of the product against its whole category, from the maker's page (or the retailer's, where labeled), not tests — the two can disagree, and the write-up says why. What "for men" means here
The search means bigger, tougher and less precious: a box that carries a real day's food (three or four meals, a shaker, a bottle), survives a truck, and doesn't look like a child's. So the ranking weights container fit and durability harder than the work-bag list does, and it includes hard coolers and a steel box that the office ranking leaves out. It doesn't mean anything about who should carry it.
Soft, hard-liner, steel, hard
Soft with a hard liner (Arctic Zone): the shape of a bag, the interior of a cooler. The HardBody liner is rigid and "leak proof, easy clean"; the SmartShelf lifts out. The best of both, which is why it leads.
Steel (Stanley): 0.6 mm cold-rolled steel with steel latches, a bottle bracket in the lid, 4.4 lb empty, lifetime warranty — and zero insulation. It is a crush-proof case for containers and an ice pack, the box for a truck bed and a toolbox.
Soft, tough fabric (Carhartt, Milwaukee): Carhartt's Rain Defender shell with YKK zippers and a dome compartment for the sandwich; Milwaukee's 1680D ballistic PACKOUT cooler with a leak-proof liner, a 24-hour ice claim and a molded base that locks to the stack.
Hard cooler (Klein): 17 quarts, foam insulation, "41°F for 30 hours", a stainless hinged lid, and a body rated to seat 300 pounds. A cooler that is also a chair.
Backpack (Lifewit 24 L): 1680D Oxford, PEVA over 8 mm foam, 1.2 lb, hands free. Everything inside rides sideways — which is why only latched containers go in it, per lunch bag vs backpack.

Buyer's guide: three questions
Where does it ride?
Truck bed: steel or hard (Stanley, Klein, Milwaukee on a stack). Cab or seat: Arctic Zone or Carhartt. Bike: the backpack. The jobsite-specific version is on best lunch box for construction workers.
How many meals?
Two: Carhartt (a 6-pack main is two 3-cup containers and an ice pack). Four: Arctic Zone with the shelf, Klein, the backpack. Four with the containers included: the meal-management bags on best meal prep bags.
No microwave?
Add a food jar or a plug-in warmer from best heated lunch box; the Stanley's lid bracket holds a Stanley food jar.
How Meal & Macro scores gear
Units we claim to have tested: 0
Plenty of sites say they packed every container on the list for a week. We didn't, and we say so. What we do instead: read the lid, material and care ratings the maker actually publishes and repeat its wording ("leak-proof", "oven safe to 450°F", "top-rack only"), do the container-fit and ice-pack arithmetic from published dimensions and the USDA's numbers, and score every pick on a public rubric for its category that weights the seal, the material and the fit first. Every figure links to where it came from; where the maker's page would not load we cite a retailer and say so.
Scores are editorial judgments from that documented research, not test results. Commissions never set a score or decide a pick. The rubrics and their weights are published.
Questions
Frequently asked
What is the most durable lunch box?
By construction: the steel Stanley (0.6 mm cold-rolled, lifetime warranty) and the Klein hard cooler (seats 300 lb). Milwaukee prints a limited lifetime warranty on its 1680D PACKOUT cooler.
How big a lunch box for a 10-hour shift?
Four containers plus two ice packs and a bottle: a 16-can hard-liner bag, a 17-quart cooler, or a 24 L backpack. The 6-pack-sized soft bags are two-meal bags.
Is the Stanley lunch box insulated?
No. It's a steel case with a bottle bracket; the cold comes from an ice pack you add.
