What makes a bento adult-sized

A bento box is a divided lunch container you eat out of — not a storage set you decant from. The adult problem with the category is portion size: most boxes on a shelf hold two to three cups, which is a child's lunch or an adult's snack. A meal that has to carry someone through a shift runs four to seven cups, and that one number cuts the field down fast.

Leak-proof, leak-resistant, airtight

Three different words, three different promises, and the makers pick theirs carefully because they get held to them. Bentgo says the Modern has a "leak-resistant silicone seal". monbento says the MB Original is "completely airtight" thanks to an internal hinged lid. Sistema says "easy locking clip and hinged lid" and never claims either. ECOlunchbox goes furthest in the other direction and prints, unprompted, that the box "is not leak-proof since no plastic gaskets are used".

So: carry a bento box flat, carry dressing and sauce in a sealed pot rather than loose in a compartment, and treat "airtight" as the fridge promise it is. Sistema's box includes a 150 ml screw-top yogurt pot; the Bentgo Modern has none, and a small screw-top jar is the accessory to add.

Which part goes in the microwave

A bento box is usually several materials at once — an outer holder, an inner tray, a silicone gasket, a latch — and a microwave rating almost never covers all of them. Bentgo is explicit: "the removable tray is microwave and dishwasher-friendly". The tray. Not the double-walled holder it sits in. monbento is the only maker here that publishes a number to work to — microwave safe "up to 3 minutes at 500 W, provided the valve is opened to let steam escape" — which is a genuinely useful instruction and also a warning, because a break-room microwave is usually 1,000 W or more.

Sistema's rule is the common one: microwave-safe without the lid, and "remove lid when in microwave to avoid dangerous steam build up". ECOlunchbox's steel box cannot go in at all. How to fill one so it arrives intact

Wet against wet, dry against dry. The failure mode in a divided box is not a leak out of the lid, it is a migration inside it: dressing into the crackers, marinade into the rice. Put anything with free liquid in a sealed pot, or in the deepest single compartment with the box carried flat.

Fill to the line, not over it. Every seal here depends on the lid sitting flush, and a compartment mounded above its wall holds the lid proud on one corner. If the box has a divider you can remove — the Bentgo Modern does — take it out when a meal is two things rather than four; a 3.5-cup compartment with a lid that closes properly beats four compartments and a gap.
