How to clean a shaker bottle: the hour rule, the gasket, and the soak for the one you forgot
A shaker gets ruined by time, not by protein. Rinse within the hour, wash with the gasket out, machine-wash the parts the maker rates for it, and soak the bottle that sat in a hot car — in that order.

Rinse within the hour
Whey dries into a film and milk sours; both happen faster warm. A bottle rinsed with tap water in the gym bathroom, cap off, ten seconds, arrives home clean enough that the nightly wash is a formality. A bottle closed with an inch of shake in it and left in a gym bag until evening arrives home with the smell that is the subject of its own page. Everything below is easier if you do this one thing.
The nightly wash
- Take it apart: cap off, whisk or agitator out, and the silicone gasket out of its channel if it comes out (BrüMate's and Hydro Flask's are designed to; BlenderBottle's cap is one piece).
- Warm water, dish soap, a bottle brush for the bottom and a small brush for the spout. The spout is where the film hides.
- Rinse the gasket and its channel — that groove is the last place residue leaves.
- Dry upside down, cap off, gasket beside it. A closed wet bottle is a smell in the morning.

The soak for the bottle you forgot
Fill with warm water and a heaping tablespoon of baking soda, shake, and leave it overnight with the cap on loosely. Wash as above. If it still smells, repeat with a splash of white vinegar instead of the baking soda (not together — they neutralize each other). If it still smells after that, the plastic has absorbed it and the bottle is done; Tritan (the Strada) and steel resist this, polypropylene doesn't. Steel and electric bottles
Steel bottles don't absorb smell; their gaskets do. Pull the gasket weekly and brush its channel. Vacuum bottles shouldn't be soaked submerged for long (water can wick into the seam), and only BrüMate rates all parts for the dishwasher. Electric bases: VOLTRX's is IPX5 — rinse it under the tap and dry it, never submerge it, never the dishwasher. PROMiXX: hand wash the whole thing.

How do you get the smell out of a shaker bottle?
