Why steel, and when not
Vacuum-insulated steel does one thing plastic can't: it keeps a shake cold for a shift. Mix at home, drink after work, and the milk hasn't turned. It also doesn't hold the whey smell polypropylene keeps, and it survives being dropped. The cost is weight — BrüMate prints 1.18 lb empty — and capacity, because a double wall eats volume: 24–26 oz nominal, 22 oz functional on the BrüMate, which is tight for a two-scoop shake with headroom. If you drink within minutes of mixing, none of this is for you; the plastic bottles on the overall ranking are lighter and bigger.

Seal and dishwasher
BrüMate: "leakproof, locking MagFlip lid", 100% leakproof for cold beverages, agitator in at all times for the seal; "all MultiShaker components are top-rack dishwasher safe". That last sentence is the reason it's first — an insulated bottle you can machine-wash in full is rare.
Ice Shaker: "twist-on 100% leak-proof lid" — a thread, not a flip cap — and a noise-free agitator; the dishwasher rating isn't on the product page we read.
Hydro Flask: "leakproof, flip-top chug spout" with a removable gasket; dishwasher rating not in the wording we could read (the maker's site blocked our reader).
BlenderBottle Sport Steel: "spill-proof locking lid", push-button open; dishwasher rating not stated on the page. It keeps the wire whisk, which makes it the strongest mixer of the four.

Buyer's guide
Two scoops or one?
Every steel bottle here is 24–26 oz nominal. A two-scoop shake with 12 oz of liquid fits with little headroom; mix in a 28 oz plastic bottle and pour into the steel one if that bothers you, or drink one-scoop shakes from the steel.
Hot drinks?
Only Hydro Flask prints a hot claim, and BrüMate limits its leakproof claim to cold. Oats or broth on a night shift is the Hydro Flask's case — or a food jar on the heated lunch box page.
The smell
Steel doesn't hold odors; gaskets do. Every one of these has a silicone gasket that comes out (Hydro Flask says so explicitly). Pull it weekly — the method is on how to clean a shaker bottle.

Plenty of sites say they packed every container on the list for a week. We didn't, and we say so. What we do instead: read the lid, material and care ratings the maker actually publishes and repeat its wording ("leak-proof", "oven safe to 450°F", "top-rack only"), do the container-fit and ice-pack arithmetic from published dimensions and the USDA's numbers, and score every pick on a public rubric for its category that weights the seal, the material and the fit first. Every figure links to where it came from; where the maker's page would not load we cite a retailer and say so.
Scores are editorial judgments from that documented research, not test results. Commissions never set a score or decide a pick. The rubrics and their weights are published.

Do stainless steel shaker bottles keep protein shakes cold?
The makers claim 24 to 30+ hours for ice or cold drinks. Mix with cold milk and the shake tracks the claim; mix with room-temperature water and it starts warm.
Can you put a stainless steel shaker in the dishwasher?
BrüMate says all components are top-rack safe. Ice Shaker, Hydro Flask and BlenderBottle Sport Steel don't state a rating on the pages we read — hand wash those unless the box says otherwise.
Is a steel shaker better than plastic?
For hours between mixing and drinking, yes. For weight, capacity and price, no. Match it to the gap.
