Why go ball-free
Three reasons people search for it. The noise — a wire whisk in a plastic bottle in a quiet office. The cleaning — the ball is the part that ends up in the disposal, and it's the part that traps the residue that smells. And the mouthfeel — a ball keeps working while you drink and can send a clump up the spout. None of those is a mixing argument; a wire whisk is the strongest mixer on the site. Ball-free is a convenience decision, and the makers here have solved mixing three different ways to make it.
Three ways to mix without a ball
The vortex wall. Helimix's design, now sold as the YETI Yonder Shaker: the bottle's inner wall is shaped so a shake spins into a vortex that mixes the powder. YETI's wording is "whisk-free Helimix Technology" and "mixes powders smoothly without a whisk or screen". Two parts. The argument against the whisk is on BlenderBottle vs Helimix.
The fixed agitator. BrüMate's removable agitator (which doubles as an infuser, and which the maker says to use at all times for the leakproof seal) and Ice Shaker's twist-on, noise-free agitator that works as a strainer. The element stays attached to the lid; it lifts out for washing and doesn't rattle. Both are in insulated steel bottles, so the design comes with cold-hold hours attached.
The motor. VOLTRX's VortexBoost (24 oz Tritan cup, 1000 mAh, USB-C, IPX5 base, cup in the dishwasher) and PROMiXX's PRO (20 oz, 12–14 oz fill guidance, X-Blade, USB-C, 60 mixes per charge, hand wash only). Buyer's guide: what you give up
With the vortex: a little mixing power on the thickest powders. With the fixed agitator: nothing in mixing, but the maker's seal claim depends on the agitator being in place (BrüMate says so explicitly). With the motor: working volume (VOLTRX says fill to 16 oz; PROMiXX 12–14), a battery to charge, and a base that never sees the dishwasher. Choose by which of those you won't notice.

Units we claim to have tested: 0
Plenty of sites say they packed every container on the list for a week. We didn't, and we say so. What we do instead: read the lid, material and care ratings the maker actually publishes and repeat its wording ("leak-proof", "oven safe to 450°F", "top-rack only"), do the container-fit and ice-pack arithmetic from published dimensions and the USDA's numbers, and score every pick on a public rubric for its category that weights the seal, the material and the fit first. Every figure links to where it came from; where the maker's page would not load we cite a retailer and say so.
Scores are editorial judgments from that documented research, not test results. Commissions never set a score or decide a pick. The rubrics and their weights are published.

Do shaker bottles without a ball actually mix protein?
Whey, yes, by every maker's account. Thick casein and gainers want a firm shake in a vortex bottle, or a motor.
Is the Helimix still made?
The design now sells as the YETI Yonder Shaker Bottle with Helimix Technology; helimix.com redirects to YETI's page.
Are ball-free shakers easier to clean?
Fewer parts: the YETI is two pieces and dishwasher safe; BrüMate says all components are top-rack safe. Motor bases are hand-wash only.
