Clear protein is a different problem

Clear protein — hydrolysed or highly filtered whey isolate sold in fruit flavors — behaves like a drink powder, not like a milkshake. It goes into plain water and disperses in seconds with barely any agitation. Nobody has ever complained about clumps in a clear isolate.

What people complain about is everything else: a head of foam like a poorly poured beer, a bottle that smells of tropical punch three weeks later, a lid that sprays when you open it, and the fact that the whole point of the stuff — a cold, juice-like drink — is ruined at room temperature. So the ranking flips. A mixing mechanism you need for casein is nearly irrelevant here; foam control, material and insulation are what matter.

The foam, and how to get less of it

Foam is air beaten into a protein solution, and protein is a very good foaming agent. Three things reduce it, and only one of them is the bottle.

Agitate less. Five or six gentle inversions, not thirty hard shakes. This is why a whisk-free bottle suits clear protein: YETI describes the Yonder's "unique wall design" that "mixes powders smoothly without a whisk or screen", which is exactly enough for a powder that wants to dissolve anyway. A free wire whisk — the best tool on the creatine page — whips air in, and the ball then gives the foam something to cling to.

Let it stand. Thirty seconds and most of the head collapses. A bottle with real headroom above the liquid gives that foam somewhere to go — fill a 27 oz bottle with 16 to 20 oz of water rather than to the neck.

Open it carefully. A pressurised head of foam behind a flip cap will spray. A lid you can crack slowly beats a push-button one for this, and a locking cap — the Strada's "push-button open" with a "secure-lock", BrüMate's MagFlip — at least guarantees it does not open in a bag on the way.

Fruit flavors, stains and odor

Clear protein is usually strongly flavored and often brightly colored, and that is harder on a bottle than vanilla whey. Two published specs help. BlenderBottle describes the Strada's Eastman Tritan as "durable, stain- and odor-resistant". Hydro Flask describes its 18/8 steel as giving "pure taste and no flavor transfer". Ice Shaker says its steel "will not absorb odors".

Steel is the reliable answer if you rotate flavors and hate a ghost of yesterday's. Tritan is the best plastic. Standard polypropylene is the one that eventually smells of every flavor at once, which is the whole subject of why shaker bottles smell.

Whatever the material, a bottle used for clear protein should be rinsed immediately — sugar-flavored residue in a warm bottle is a faster problem than plain whey. All of the plastic bottles here are top-rack dishwasher safe; Ice Shaker and Hydro Flask are steel with removable gaskets to wash separately.

Cold is most of the experience

Nobody drinks clear protein warm twice. If the bottle sits in a gym bag for an hour, or on a desk all morning, insulation is doing more for the experience than anything else on the spec sheet.

The published figures: Ice Shaker claims "ice-cold for 30+ hours", Hydro Flask's TempShield "up to 24 hours" cold, BlenderBottle's Sport Stainless "up to 24 hours". Plastic bottles publish nothing, because they hold cold for as long as ice in them lasts — which is fine if you mix and drink, and not fine if you mix at 6 a.m. for a 10 a.m. session. One trade-off to accept: you cannot see inside a steel bottle. With clear protein that matters less than with a thick shake, because there is nothing to inspect — the drink either dissolved or it didn't, and it always does.
