Why creatine is a different mixing problem

Whey protein disperses. Creatine monohydrate does not really dissolve in cold water at all — it suspends, and then it settles. Leave a shaken bottle on a bench for ten minutes and there is a fine white layer on the bottom; leave it in a car overnight and that layer becomes a crust. Neither is a defect in the powder or the bottle. It is what monohydrate does.

So the specs that matter for creatine are not the ones that matter for protein. A shaker that produces a smooth, foam-free whey shake can still leave a third of a scoop of creatine welded into the corner where the wall meets the base. What you want is: something that mechanically reaches the bottom, a base with a curve rather than a corner, a mouth wide enough for a bottle brush, and parts that go in a dishwasher.

Whisk, agitator, vortex or motor

A free wire whisk (BlenderBottle's BlenderBall) is the best passive design for grit, because it is a loose object that travels the full length of the bottle and scours the base curve as it goes. BlenderBottle pairs it with a "rounded base for better mixing", and both the Classic and the Strada rate all parts as dishwasher safe.

A fixed or twist-in agitator (Ice Shaker's "patented, noise-free agitator", BrüMate's removable agitator) mixes well and stays where it is put, which means it agitates the liquid but does not scrub the bottom. Both come out for cleaning, and BrüMate rates all components top-rack dishwasher safe.

A vortex wall — the whisk-free approach on the ball-free shakers — is excellent for protein and the weakest design here for creatine, because nothing physically touches the settled layer.

The order that leaves less in the bottom

Liquid first, then powder, then shake. Powder onto a dry bottle base cakes on contact with the first splash of water and then you are trying to break up a paste. This is the same rule as mixing protein without clumps, and it matters more with creatine, not less.

Use more water than feels necessary — a suspension in 12 to 16 oz behaves far better than the same dose in 6 oz. Shake sideways rather than up and down so the whisk travels the length of the bottle. And if you are stacking creatine into a protein shake, add the creatine last, after the protein is already dispersed.

If you carry the powder to the gym dry and add water there, the Smartshake's two detachable compartments (100 ml and 150 ml) are the cleanest way to do it — a pre-measured dose in a compartment beats a scoop rattling around in a gym bag.

Why the wash matters more here

Settled creatine that dries becomes a hard film, and a hard film in a corner under a gasket is where a bottle starts to smell.
