Shakers / The picks
The best shaker bottle for Huel: capacity, a real mixer, and a lid that locks
A meal-replacement shake is three times the powder of a whey scoop in roughly the same liquid, so it is thicker and it fills the bottle. That rules out 20-ounce bottles and strainers, and leaves five bottles worth buying.

Three specs a meal-replacement shake demands
A whey shake is about 30 grams of powder in 10 to 12 ounces of liquid. A meal-replacement powder is a meal: a far larger dose of powder, usually with oats, flax or pea protein in it, which means two things change at once. There is more solid matter to break up, and there is less empty space left in the bottle to break it up in.
So the ranking here runs on three published specs and nothing else:
- Capacity of 27 ounces or more. Not because the drink is 27 ounces, but because a thick shake needs roughly a third of the bottle empty for the mixer to travel. Four of the five picks here are 27 or 28 ounces.
- A mixer that attacks the powder, not one that filters it. A wire whisk ball, a molded vortex wall or a motor. A strainer — the design Stanley uses on the Vitalize — holds lumps back at the spout rather than breaking them up, which is exactly wrong for a thick powder.
- A lid the maker will call leak-proof, ideally one that locks. A full, heavy, thick shake shaken hard puts more pressure on a flip cap than a thin whey shake does.
Capacity, mixer, lock, washing
| Pick | Capacity | Mixer | Lid | Dishwasher |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BlenderBottle Classic V2 | "20oz, 28oz, 45oz" | "BlenderBall wire whisk" with a "rounded base" | "Leakproof"; "StayOpen flip cap" — no lock | "All pieces (including the BlenderBall) are dishwasher safe" |
| BlenderBottle Strada Tritan | "24oz, 28oz" | "BlenderBall wire whisk" | "Lockable flip cap"; "secure-lock for a quick, leak-proof seal" | "Bottle, lid, and BlenderBall whisk are top-rack dishwasher safe" |
| VOLTRX VortexBoost | "24oz capacity"; "use up to 16oz (450ml) to prevent spills" | Motor base: "ensures even mixing, eliminating clumps" | Removable base; no leak-proof claim on the page we read | Cup yes; base "should never be placed in the dishwasher" |
| YETI Yonder Shaker | "27 oz (737 ml)" | "Whisk-free Helimix Technology" — a molded wall | "100% Leakproof" with a covered chug spout | "Dishwasher safe" |
| Contigo Shake & Go Fit | 28 oz (20 oz also offered) | "Improved agitator ball for even mixing" | "Leakproof lid"; "the cover flips open 180°" | "The shaker bottle and leakproof lid are top-rack dishwasher-safe" |
Every figure is the maker's own published wording. Contigo's and VOLTRX's pages blocked or limited our reader, so their rows are that maker's wording as indexed, which is why their spec sheets are thinner.
Why 20 ounces is not enough
Three things have to fit in a shaker: the powder, the liquid and the air above both. The air is the part nobody budgets for, and it is the part a thick powder needs most — a whisk ball has to fall through the liquid to break up solids, and a bottle filled to the neck does not mix, it sloshes.
For a meal-sized dose, that puts you at 27 to 28 ounces, which is exactly where BlenderBottle centres both its main lines and where YETI and Contigo both sit. It also explains the two bottles not on this page: the 20-ounce Smartshake and the 20-ounce Stanley Vitalize are one-scoop bottles with a strainer or a storage compartment, and they are good at what they do — just not at this. The full arithmetic is on what size shaker bottle do I need.
The VOLTRX is the interesting case. On capacity alone it should rank last: 24 ounces printed, and the maker itself says to "use up to 16oz (450ml) to prevent spills". It ranks third because the motor changes the trade — a vortex driven by a motor does not need the same headroom a falling ball does, so 16 ounces of working fill mixes a thick shake that a hand-shaken 16 ounces would not. If you want to drink more than that in one go, it is the wrong bottle.
The cleaning problem is the real one
Whey rinses. A powder with oats and flax in it does not — it sets into a film at the base and around the thread, and a bottle that is awkward to wash becomes a bottle that smells. Three published details decide how bad this gets:
- Is the mixer dishwasher safe? BlenderBottle says every piece including the ball goes in (top rack for cup and lid, whisk in the silverware bin). YETI's answer is better still: there is nothing loose to wash, because the mixing is done by the wall.
- Is the material odor-resistant? Tritan is, and BlenderBottle says so of the Strada — "stain- and odor-resistant Eastman Tritan". Polypropylene holds the smell longer, which is the Classic's one real weakness.
- How many parts come apart? The VOLTRX base must never go in a dishwasher and has to be dried separately. That is the price of the motor.
The habit that actually prevents the problem is rinsing it within the hour, before the film sets. What to do when it is already too late is on how to clean a shaker bottle, and the smell itself gets its own page: why does my shaker bottle smell.

Buyer's guide
Whisk ball, vortex wall, or motor?
For a thick meal powder, in that order of effectiveness and reverse order of convenience. A wire whisk is the strongest hand tool and the thing you have to wash; a vortex wall is the easiest to clean and needs a genuinely hard shake; a motor does the work and adds a part that must stay dry. The field by mechanism is on best shaker bottle without a ball and best electric shaker bottle.
Does it need to be insulated?
Only if there is a gap between mixing and drinking. A meal-replacement shake drunk within twenty minutes gains nothing from a vacuum wall and loses capacity to it: insulated steel shakers cluster at 20 to 26 ounces because the wall is thick. If the shake is mixed at 6 a.m. and drunk at 11, that changes — see best stainless steel shaker bottle and how long a shake lasts in a shaker bottle.
How many bottles should you own?
Two, if the powder is a daily meal. One is always in the sink or in the dishwasher, and a thick powder punishes you for reusing an unwashed bottle more than whey does. The Strada being sold as a two-pack is genuinely the cheapest way to own two good bottles.
What about mixing it the night before?
Then you are storing a dairy-free but still perishable drink, and the two-hour rule applies once it leaves the fridge. A bottle whose maker states a cold-hold figure is the right tool for that; the timings are on how long does a protein shake last in a shaker bottle.
How Meal & Macro picks gear
Researched, compared and scored
Every pick starts with the maker's own product page and manual: the lid, material and care ratings in its exact wording ("leak-proof", "oven safe to 450°F", "top-rack only"), the container-fit and ice-pack arithmetic worked out from published dimensions and the USDA's numbers, and a score on a public rubric for the category that weights the seal, the material and the fit first. Models are compared side by side, so each page lands on one clear pick per use case with the reason stated. Every figure links to where it came from; where the maker's page would not load we cite a retailer and say so.
Scores are editorial judgments built from that documented research. Commissions never set a score or decide a pick. The rubrics and their weights are published.
Questions
Frequently asked
What size shaker do you need for a meal-replacement powder?
Twenty-seven to twenty-eight ounces. A meal-sized dose of powder plus its liquid wants about two thirds of the bottle, leaving the top third empty so the mixer can move. A 20-ounce bottle is a one-scoop whey bottle, not a meal bottle.
Is a wire whisk or an electric shaker better for thick powders?
A wire whisk is the strongest tool you can use by hand, and BlenderBottle states that every part of the Classic V2, ball included, is dishwasher safe. An electric shaker removes the effort but caps the working volume — VOLTRX says to fill its 24 oz cup to 16 oz.
Why does meal-replacement powder stick to the bottom of the bottle?
Too little headroom and too little liquid at the start. Pour the liquid first, add the powder, then shake with roughly a third of the bottle empty. A rounded base — BlenderBottle publishes one on both the Classic and the Strada — leaves nowhere for a dry corner of powder to hide.
Can you put a shaker bottle with powder residue in the dishwasher?
Yes, if the maker rates the parts for it: BlenderBottle, YETI, Contigo and BrüMate all publish dishwasher ratings, while an electric shaker's motor base never goes in one. Rinse within the hour anyway — a grain-based powder sets into a film that a dishwasher cycle does not always lift.
