Two designs, one search
"Lunch box with a thermos" describes two different products, and they fail in opposite ways.
Built in. OmieBox and OmieBox UP sink a vacuum flask into the body of a bento, so one lid closes over hot soup and cold fruit at once. Nothing to pack separately, nothing to forget — but the whole box inherits the flask's rules: hand wash, never a microwave, and a pound and a half of empty weight. Thermos's Freestyle kit is a softer version of the same idea: the 8 oz jar is a separate piece, but it snaps into the one container.
Carried. The Stanley Classic is a steel case with a bracket in the lid shaped to hold a bottle or a Stanley food jar. It insulates nothing itself; it protects what you put in it and holds the flask upright. Buy the flask separately and you get far more hot food and far better published hours — the Thermos Stainless King is 24 oz and hot for 14 hours — at the cost of two objects instead of one.

Read that table twice, because it contains the whole finding: the built-in flasks claim 4 hours and the standalone flask claims 14. Vacuum performance follows volume and wall thickness, and a thermos small enough to sink into a bento is a thermos that will not hold heat through a 12-hour shift. A built-in flask is for a school day. A standalone flask is for a work day.
How much hot food you actually get
8.5 ounces is a mug of soup. 12 ounces is a small bowl. 16 is a lunch; 24 is a meal with rice in it. Set against a portion you would actually plan — a 1.5-cup serving of chili is 12 oz — the original OmieBox is a side dish, the UP is a lunch, and the two Thermos jars are meals. If hot food is the main event rather than a warm extra, the answer is the biggest flask you will carry, not the cleverest box.
The rest of the box matters too. OmieBox's cold side is rated for "up to 1 teaspoon of liquid per side compartment", which is the maker telling you not to put dressing in it. Stanley's 10-quart steel case swallows four containers and a flask and weighs 4.4 lb empty before any of them go in.
The washing rules a vacuum wall imposes
A vacuum flask cannot be microwaved, cannot be put on a stove, and in most cases should not be run through a dishwasher on the bottom rack. That rule travels to whatever it is attached to. OmieLife is blunt about it: "Hand wash recommended", "Do not microwave, oven, or stovetop", and do not boil the thermos. OmieBox UP at least makes its inner tray top-rack safe. Thermos's Freestyle kit and the 16 oz jar set are both "Dishwasher safe — top rack only".

Buyer's guide: three questions
Is this for a child or a shift?
A child: built in, because one object survives a school day and two do not. OmieBox for ages 3 to 7, OmieBox UP for older. A shift: a standalone flask and any bag, because 14 published hours beats 4.
How much hot food?
Under 12 oz: a built-in flask covers it. Over that: a 16 or 24 oz jar, and the box becomes a carrier. Heated boxes that cook rather than insulate are a third route, ranked on best heated lunch box.
Who washes it?
If the answer is "the dishwasher", the built-in OmieBox is the wrong buy — it is hand wash, permanently. The Thermos kit and the 16 oz set are top-rack safe, and a standalone flask plus a plastic tray means only the flask needs hand attention.

OmieBox (8.5 oz thermos in a 47 oz box) and OmieBox UP (12 oz thermos plus a side compartment with an ice pack). Thermos's Kids Freestyle Kit is close: the 8 oz jar is a separate piece that snaps into the container.
How long does a built-in thermos keep food hot?
OmieLife publishes "up to 4 hours" for the OmieBox UP's 12 oz insert; the retailer listing for the original OmieBox says 4 to 6 hours depending on how it was prepared. A full-size 24 oz flask claims 14 hours, which is the trade-off for carrying two objects.
Can you microwave a lunch box with a thermos in it?
Never the thermos. OmieLife says do not microwave any part of the box. Where a plastic tray is removable — Thermos's kit, or a separate bento — only that tray goes in.
Do I need to preheat a thermos?
Yes, if you want the published hours. Fill it with boiling water, wait five minutes, tip it out, then add food already above 165°F. Otherwise the flask spends its first hour heating itself instead of holding your lunch.
