What counts as a set
A matched set is worth buying for exactly two reasons: it is cheaper than the pieces, and a child will carry a bottle that matches the box when they will lose one that does not. Neither reason survives if the maker only specifies half of it.
That is why this page is short, and why it is almost entirely one brand. Thermos sells matched lunch-and-bottle sets as single items with published hours on the insulated pieces. Bentgo sells the same idea — its Kids Prints lunch box comes paired with a 15 oz Tritan bottle, and a five-piece version adds a bag and two ice packs — but every one of those bundles was on backorder on Bentgo's own store when we checked on 28 September 2026, so none of them are ranked here. Simple Modern, PackIt and the rest sell the halves and leave you to pair them, which is the "build your own" route below.
One thing no set on this page publishes: the lunch box itself. Thermos states hours, capacities and lid designs for every bottle and every food jar, and nothing at all — no dimensions, no lining material, no cold-hold figure — for the soft boxes. That is the honest weakness of the category. If the box is the part you care about, buy it on its own from best lunch box to keep food cold, where the makers do print the numbers.

The piece most sets leave out
Four of the five sets here include no cold source, and a soft lunch box without one is a bag, not a cooler. The USDA's bag-lunch guidance is two cold sources per lunch — gel packs at least 5 by 3 inches, or one pack and a frozen drink — placed above and below the food, with perishable food out of refrigeration for no more than two hours at room temperature.
In practice a frozen 12 oz bottle counts as one of those two sources, which is a real argument for the sets that include a bottle: freeze it the night before and it chills the box on the way to school. But it is one source, not two, and it stops working as soon as the child drinks it. Add a pack. The arithmetic is on how many ice packs for a lunch box.
When to build your own set
Three cases make the pieces the better buy. First, if the box is the important part — the sets do not specify theirs. Second, if the food is adult-sized: the biggest hot piece in any set here is 16 oz, against 24 oz and a published 14 hours on a full-size Thermos food jar. Third, if you already own containers, because a set that comes with its own trays is a set you are paying for twice.
Built yourself, a school set is: one divided box from best lunch box for kindergarten, one insulated bag, two gel packs, and a bottle. That is four purchases against one, and it is the route that lets you match a kindergartner's 2.4 cups or a teenager's seven.

Buyer's guide: three questions
Does lunch need to be hot?
Yes: the Paw Patrol four-piece (10 oz) or the 16 oz bottle-and-jar pair. No: the bottle-and-box or Icon upright sets, which are cold-lunch kit.
How old is the child?
Thermos does the sizing for you here. The 12 oz bottles are for younger children; the 16 oz bottle is stated as being for "older kids, tweens, and teens"; the 18 oz Icon bottle is the biggest in the kids line. The boxes those bottles pair with are on best lunch box for teens.
Is there a gel pack in the house already?
If not, the Paw Patrol set is the only one that ships with a cold source, and that is most of why it leads. If there is, the two-piece sets get cheaper and the ranking changes.

Plenty of sites say they packed every container on the list for a week. We didn't, and we say so. What we do instead: read the lid, material and care ratings the maker actually publishes and repeat its wording ("leak-proof", "oven safe to 450°F", "top-rack only"), do the container-fit and ice-pack arithmetic from published dimensions and the USDA's numbers, and score every pick on a public rubric for its category that weights the seal, the material and the fit first. Every figure links to where it came from; where the maker's page would not load we cite a retailer and say so.

Is a matching lunch box and water bottle set cheaper than buying separately?
Usually a little, and Thermos prices its bundles below the sum of the pieces. The bigger saving is practical: one purchase, one size decision, and a bottle that fits the box it came with.
Do lunch box and water bottle sets come with an ice pack?
Most do not. Of the five sets here, only the Thermos Paw Patrol four-piece includes a reusable hard ice pack. The USDA asks for two cold sources per lunch, so plan on buying packs separately.
What size water bottle should a school set have?
Thermos's own guidance: 12 oz for younger children, 16 oz for "older kids, tweens, and teens", and 18 oz as the largest in its kids line. A bottle a child cannot finish gets carried home full.
Can you put a hot drink in a FUNtainer bottle?
No. Thermos states "Not for hot liquids" on the FUNtainer bottles. Hot food goes in the food jar, which is a different piece with a different lid.
