Cook & Freeze / Guide
What size rice cooker do you need for meal prep? Convert the cups into meals first
A rice cooker's headline number is the most misread spec in the kitchen. One maker means uncooked cups, another means cooked, and the cup itself is usually 180 ml rather than 240. Fix the units and the size choice is obvious.

The cups problem
Three different things are called a "cup" on rice cooker pages, and makers do not always say which one they mean.
- The rice cup. The plastic cup in the box is usually about 180 ml, not a US measuring cup of 240 ml. You can verify it from Zojirushi's own spec: the NS-TPC10 is published as "up to 5.5 cups / 1.0 liter", and 5.5 × 180 ml is 990 ml. So Zojirushi's cup is a 180 ml rice cup, and a recipe calling for US cups is not the same measurement.
- Uncooked capacity. How much dry rice the pot takes. Zojirushi's 5.5 and CUCKOO's 6 are both uncooked figures.
- Cooked capacity. How much finished rice comes out. CUCKOO publishes both — "6 Cups (Uncooked)" and "12 Cups (Cooked)" — which is the clearest statement of the conversion you will find on a product page: roughly double. Aroma's ARC-914SBD is quoted the other way round, as cooking "2 to 8 cups", which is a cooked figure.
Everything below uses cooked cups, because that is the unit your containers are filled in.
What each size really makes
| Cooker | Published capacity | Cooked cups per run | Meals per run | Footprint |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aroma ARC-914SBD | "Perfectly cooks 2 to 8 cups of any variety of rice" (cooked) | Up to 8 | About 8 | Not published on the page we could read |
| Zojirushi NS-TPC10 | "Up to 5.5 cups / 1.0 liter" uncooked | About 11 | About 11 | "10-1/8 × 14 × 8-5/8 inches"; 610 W |
| CUCKOO CR-0675F | "6 Cups (Uncooked)" / "12 Cups (Cooked)" | 12 | About 12 | "12.8 × 9.4 × 8.5 in"; 10 lb |
| Zojirushi NS-TPC18 (the larger model) | 10-cup version offered alongside the 5.5 | About 20 | About 20 | Larger than the 5.5; figures not quoted here |
Published capacities are each maker's own wording. "Cooked cups per run" applies the roughly 2× conversion CUCKOO publishes for its own machine; treat it as a planning estimate, not a maker figure.
The size by household
One person, five lunches a week. Five cooked cups. An 8-cup-cooked machine like the Aroma covers it in one run with room to spare, and it is the right size for a small kitchen — the trap at this end is buying a 10-cup cooker and then cooking small batches in it badly, because rice cookers work best near their rated load.
Two people, five lunches each. Ten cooked cups, which is the 5.5-cup-uncooked Zojirushi or the 6-cup CUCKOO in a single run. This is the sweet spot of the whole category and the reason both machines exist at that size. The rest of the two-person system is on meal prep for two people.
A family of four, dinners plus lunches. Fifteen to twenty cooked cups, which means a 10-cup uncooked machine, or two runs of a 6-cup. Two runs is genuinely fine if the cooker has a decent keep-warm, because the first batch holds while the second cooks. The household plan is on how to meal prep for a family of 4.
Rice plus everything else. If you want one appliance for rice, chili and shredded chicken, the size question changes entirely — that is a multicooker in quarts, not a rice cooker in cups: rice cooker vs Instant Pot.
Why keep-warm matters more than capacity
For meal prep specifically, the spec that changes your Sunday is not the number of cups. It is what happens after the rice is done, because you are rarely standing there when it finishes.
- Zojirushi NS-TPC10 publishes "automatic keep warm, extended keep warm and reheating cycle" plus a two-setting delay timer. Extended keep-warm is the feature that lets you cook in the afternoon and portion in the evening without the rice drying at the edges.
- CUCKOO CR-0675F lists Keep Warm, Reheat and a Preset Timer among its thirteen modes, plus a Multi-Cook setting for oatmeal and stews and an Auto-Clean cycle that steams the interior.
- Aroma ARC-914SBD "automatically switches to Keep Warm" and has a delay timer, but does not publish a keep-warm duration — so treat it as a hold, not as storage.
One rule regardless of machine: rice should not sit on keep-warm all day and then go into the fridge warm. Portion it while it is hot, let it cool uncovered, then lid and refrigerate — the storage side of this is on how to meal prep rice, and the fridge window is on how long does meal prep last in the fridge.

How Meal & Macro picks gear
Researched, compared and scored
Every pick starts with the maker's own product page and manual: the lid, material and care ratings in its exact wording ("leak-proof", "oven safe to 450°F", "top-rack only"), the container-fit and ice-pack arithmetic worked out from published dimensions and the USDA's numbers, and a score on a public rubric for the category that weights the seal, the material and the fit first. Models are compared side by side, so each page lands on one clear pick per use case with the reason stated. Every figure links to where it came from; where the maker's page would not load we cite a retailer and say so.
Scores are editorial judgments built from that documented research. Commissions never set a score or decide a pick. The rubrics and their weights are published.
Questions
Frequently asked
Is a rice cooker cup the same as a measuring cup?
No. The cup supplied with most cookers is about 180 ml, where a US measuring cup is 240 ml. Zojirushi's own figure makes it visible: "up to 5.5 cups / 1.0 liter" works out at roughly 180 ml per cup.
What size rice cooker do I need for 2 people?
About 6 cups uncooked, which CUCKOO publishes as 12 cooked cups — enough for five lunches each in one run. A 5.5-cup uncooked Zojirushi is the same bracket at about 11 cooked cups.
How much cooked rice does a cup of uncooked rice make?
Roughly double. CUCKOO states both figures for the same machine — 6 cups uncooked, 12 cooked — which is the cleanest published confirmation of the conversion. Use it to turn any uncooked capacity into meals.
Can you cook a small batch in a big rice cooker?
You can, but cookers work best near their rated load, and a very small batch in a large pot tends to dry at the edges. If most weeks are five lunches for one person, buy the smaller machine and use it fully rather than the large one half empty.
