Scales / Guide
Is a food scale worth it? Yes if you track, probably not if you don't
A scale earns its place for exactly three jobs: counting macros, portioning a batch into equal containers, and baking. For everything else a measuring cup is fine, and a smart scale is a separate decision again.

The honest answer, by use case
A kitchen scale is a cheap tool that some people use daily for years and others use twice. The difference is not discipline — it is whether what you are doing actually needs a number you can repeat.
| If you… | Worth it? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Count macros or calories | Yes, essential | Nutrition databases are per 100 g. Without grams you are logging an estimate of an estimate. |
| Portion a batch into five containers | Yes | Equal portions by eye drift badly — the first container gets the most and the fifth gets the least. |
| Bake | Yes | A cup of flour varies by how it was scooped. Grams do not. |
| Follow a cut or a bulk with a target | Yes | A consistent error is fine; a random one makes the result unreadable. |
| Cook by taste, eat by appetite | No | A scale adds a step and changes nothing about the food. |
| Only want "a bit more protein" | Not yet | Weigh for one week to learn what a portion looks like, then stop. A borrowed scale does this. |
The follow-up question is whether the cheap one is accurate enough, and the answer turns on three specs people conflate — resolution, tolerance and minimum load: how accurate are food scales.
How wrong is eyeballing?
The case for a scale is not that eyeballing is hopeless — it is that the error is unpredictable and it compounds. Two specific places it bites:
- Dense foods, where a small volume is a lot of calories. Oils, nut butters, cheese, nuts, granola, dressings. A "tablespoon" of peanut butter poured off a knife can easily be half again as much as a level one. Over a day across four such items, the drift is larger than most people's entire deficit.
- Protein portions, where the pack is the only reference. A pack of chicken is sold by total weight; the pieces in it are not equal. Splitting a 2.2 lb pack into "four 8 oz portions" by eye routinely produces portions from 6 to 11 oz.
The flipside is the honest part: for broccoli, courgettes, salad leaves and most vegetables, eyeballing is completely fine, because being 40% out on a food with very few calories per gram does not matter. A scale is for the dense half of the plate.
Why cups fail for solids
Measuring cups measure volume. That works perfectly for liquids and badly for anything that can be packed, heaped, chopped differently or settled. Flour scooped straight from the bag weighs noticeably more than flour spooned in and levelled; chopped chicken fills a cup differently depending on the size of the pieces; rice measured dry and rice measured cooked are different foods entirely.
That last one is the most common mistake in meal prep, and it is worth separating from the scale question: raw and cooked weights differ because of water, not because the food changed its macros. Chicken loses about a quarter of its weight cooking; rice roughly triples. Which one to weigh, and the yields, are on do you weigh food cooked or raw. Getting that wrong is a bigger error than not owning a scale at all.
What you can skip
If you have decided a scale is worth it, the next question is which features are. Most of them are not:
- 0.1 g resolution — skip it unless you weigh supplements, creatine or espresso. For food, 1 g graduation is finer than the variation in the food itself.
- An app and a nutrition database — optional. A smart scale converts grams to macros on your phone, which saves typing. If you already log in an app, a plain scale plus that app does the same thing. If you do not log anywhere, the database is the reason to buy one. The field is ranked on best smart food scales.
- A bowl — skip it. Tare handles any container you already own. A bowl on top is one more thing to store.
- 22 lb capacity — skip it unless you bulk-cook. 11 lb covers a full mixing bowl.
- A pull-out display — surprisingly worth it. The one genuine annoyance with cheap scales is that a wide bowl covers the number. OXO solves it mechanically; the smart scales solve it by putting the reading on your phone.
The two features actually worth paying for are a tare button that works one-handed and a published graduation. The second is rarer than it should be — plenty of cheap scales never say whether they read in 1 g or 5 g steps, and a 5 g scale cannot portion a 30 g serving of anything. The budget scales whose makers do publish it are on best food scales under twenty dollars.
When a scale is the wrong tool
Three situations where buying one is a mistake, and what to do instead:
- You want portion control without counting. A color-coded portion kit or a divided tray does this better — the compartment is the measurement, and there is no number to log. That approach is on best portion control containers, and the original kit is reviewed on the Beachbody portion control containers review.
- You eat out most days. A scale cannot weigh a restaurant plate, and the error there dwarfs anything it could fix at home.
- Weighing food makes eating stressful. This is a real outcome for some people, and a tool that makes meals worse is not worth any accuracy gain. Divided containers and consistent recipes get you most of the benefit without a number.
And one that is not a reason to skip it: cost. The cheapest scale with a published 1 g graduation costs less than a week of coffee and lasts years on AAA batteries. If the use case fits, the price is not the obstacle.

How Meal & Macro picks gear
Researched, compared and scored
Every pick starts with the maker's own product page and manual: the lid, material and care ratings in its exact wording ("leak-proof", "oven safe to 450°F", "top-rack only"), the container-fit and ice-pack arithmetic worked out from published dimensions and the USDA's numbers, and a score on a public rubric for the category that weights the seal, the material and the fit first. Models are compared side by side, so each page lands on one clear pick per use case with the reason stated. Every figure links to where it came from; where the maker's page would not load we cite a retailer and say so.
Scores are editorial judgments built from that documented research. Commissions never set a score or decide a pick. The rubrics and their weights are published.
Questions
Frequently asked
Is a food scale worth it for weight loss?
If you are tracking calories, yes — nutrition data is per 100 g and dense foods like oils and nut butters are where eyeballing goes most wrong. If you are not tracking, divided containers do more for portion size than a number on a display.
Do I need a 0.1 g food scale?
Not for food. A 1 g graduation is finer than the natural variation in a chicken breast. Only buy 0.1 g if you weigh supplements, creatine or coffee.
Is a smart food scale better than a regular one?
It is a convenience, not an accuracy upgrade — both read in 1 g steps. A smart scale does the grams-to-macros conversion in an app, which saves typing. If you already log in a tracking app, a plain scale does the same job.
Can I use measuring cups instead of a food scale?
For liquids, yes. For solids that pack or heap — flour, nut butter, chopped meat, granola — no: a cup of the same food can vary by a third depending on how it was filled. That variation is exactly what a scale removes.
